In a bold and heartfelt statement, India National Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir gave fans a rare look into his mindset and coaching vision during the ongoing third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at the Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Speaking during a special segment on the official broadcaster with Cheteshwar Pujara, Gautam Gambhir made it clear that his focus isn’t just on winning matches but also on building a strong culture. The head coach also emphasized that first-class cricket holds the highest value for him.

Gautam Gambhir was quoted as saying by Sony Sports, “Gambhir said, "Probably this is the first time that the transition is happening in all three departments. I think for me, first-class cricket is the most important format back home.”

There is already a lot of buzz about Gambhir’s coaching style and bold calls, but the head coach has emphasized that it’s not about him, but it’s about what’s best for Indian cricket. He also stressed that every opinion from the cricket legends or fans about the team environment really matters to him.

Gambhir added, “It is about fighting every day. And it is about representing the tricolor every day. Gautam Gambhir is not important. Indian cricket is important. Everyone has the right to have an opinion about the culture of that dressing room. And every opinion for me will matter.”

Meanwhile, Gambhir had flown back to India to be with his ailing mother before the first Test against England, but he returned in time for the five-match Test series opener at Headingley.

Speaking about the importance of family, the former Indian opener said that family matters a lot, but being part of the Indian cricket team comes with a purpose, and he believes in staying focused and fully committed every moment.

The coach added, “See, family's role is important, but you have got to understand one thing. You're here for a purpose. For me, I think every day is a switch-on moment.”

Gautam Gambhir’s Test tenure under fire

Notably, Gambhir has had a brilliant start as the white-ball coach, leading India to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and guiding a fearless young T20I side under Suryakumar Yadav to several victories. However, his journey in Test cricket hasn’t been impressive so far.

India suffered a major blow last year, losing their first home Test series in 12 years to New Zealand, and that too in a shocking 0-3 whitewash. They also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia after a decade. They could win only one game and drew one Down Under.

These setbacks proved too costly, as India missed out on a third straight spot in the World Test Championship final. Under Gambhir's tenure, India has so far won just 4 out of 12 matches, lost 7, and drawn 1, raising concerns about his red-ball tenure.
