With MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) winning the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) title in Dubai the other night, CSK became only the second team to win the IPL tournament four times. It also ignited the debate as to who is the better captain in IPL- MS Dhoni or Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma. And Gautam Gambhir shared his opinion on the debate as well.
Mumbai Indians have won the IPL in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, while the Chennai Super Kings have won the tournament in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021. MS Dhoni was the first captain to win the Indian Premier League in back-to-back seasons, while Rohit followed him by winning it the last two years.
CSK have reached the final of the IPL 9 times, winning four and losing five. Their narrowest loss came to MI in 2019 when CSK was beaten by just one run thanks to some Lasith Malinga magic. It is very hard to differentiate between the two captains, but Gambhir has made his choice, which might not go down well with fans.
No, It Is Rohit Sharma- Gautam Gambhir Picks Rohit As The Best All-Time IPL Captain Over MS Dhoni
Gautam Gambhir was asked on the ESPNCricinfo show ‘Haan ya Na’ (Yes or No), whether Chennai Super Kings’ MS Dhoni is the IPL’s all-time best captain, and much to the disappointment of MSD fans, Gambhir’s answer is a no.
For the two-time IPL winning captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Rohit Sharma is the best all-time IPL captain solely on the basis of the number of IPL titles won.
“No, it is Rohit Sharma. If you talk about titles, one has won 4 and the other five,” the former India opener said.
Taking an analytical look at the CSK’s IPL 2021 winning campaign, Gambhir pointed out the opening pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis, who scored 756 runs in partnerships – the third-highest for a single edition in the IPL – and said that they had a huge role to play in the team’s success.
“To a certain extent but not 100 percent because Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, and the way the bowlers performed. But yes, they have been a major factor considering the kind of form they have shown,” Gambhir pointed out.
