Veteran India fast bowler Ishant Sharma has urged critics and fans to let pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah do what he feels is best for the country. Ishant noted that Bumrah continues to represent the India national cricket team despite dealing with serious injuries such as multiple stress fractures.
Bumrah, known for his unconventional bowling style, is currently part of the Indian squad for the ongoing five-match series against England. The 31-year-old has taken 12 wickets in five innings at an average of 24.08, including two five-wicket hauls. He is currently ranked No. 1 in the ICC Test bowling rankings.
Everybody’s Talking About Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload - Ishant Sharma
There have been discussions over Jasprit Bumrah's availability during the ongoing series. The Indian team management had confirmed before the series that Bumrah would only feature in three of the five Tests.
In a chat with CNN-News18 Cricketnext, Ishant Sharma addressed the ongoing debate about Bumrah's workload. He pointed out that Bumrah has suffered from more than one stress fracture in the past, and his body requires special attention.
“I don’t know. Everybody’s talking about Jasprit Bumrah’s workload," Ishant said. “The reason I say this is – he has had a stress fracture, not just one, multiple stress fractures. So, he has a body that needs to be looked after."
Bumrah has already played two matches, both resulting in defeats for India. The third Test is currently underway in Manchester, where Bumrah has bowled 13 overs without claiming a wicket so far.
Jasprit Bumrah Is the Best Judge of His Body - Ishant Sharma
Ishant Sharma urged critics to back Bumrah, saying the bowler knows what’s best for his body and the team. He emphasized that Bumrah hasn’t turned down any opportunity to play for India and needs the backing of fans and critics alike.
“Everyone wants Jasprit Bumrah, but nobody thinks about wanting a Jasprit Bumrah who can stay fit for all five Tests. He is the best person to judge his own body. Let him do what he feels is best for the country – and he is doing it," Ishant continued.
“After two stress fractures, he’s still playing for India. He hasn’t said no to playing. So just back him, support him – that’s all I’ll say," he added.
Don’t Think We Should Compare Anyone to Anyone Else - Ishant Sharma
Ishant Sharma said that the team is filled with fresh and energetic talent, adding that it would be unfair to compare them so early in their careers. He advised the players to embrace the challenges and enjoy the process, saying that loving the grind is key to long-term success.
“I don’t think we should compare anyone to anyone else. They’re just starting their careers. Let them do what they can, let them learn from their mistakes. I’d just tell them — love the grind. Because if you love the grind, you’ll do well," Ishant said.
“That’s it. Everyone should just support them and tell them to enjoy the journey," he added.
