Sanju Samson has shined as an opener for India
The wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson has finally been getting consistent opportunities in the Indian team and he has made sure to deliver the goods.
Sanju Samson was promised by the skipper Suryakumar Yadav during the Duleep Trophy that he would be getting seven consecutive matches on the trot in T20I cricket as an opener.
Sanju Samson scored 29 and 19 runs in his first two outings before smashing an astonishing ton in the third match against Bangladesh in Hyderabad.
As India came to South Africa for the T20Is, Sanju Samson continued his form and blasted an epic century. The wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson bagged the Player of the Match award for his heroics with the bat in the first T20I of the four-match series against the South Africa National Cricket Team at Kingsmead in Durban.
He completed his half-century off 27 balls and looked quite desperate to reach three figures. Samson was at his selfless best as he accelerated further and hit an astonishing ton off 47 balls, which was the fastest by an Indian against South Africa.
He also became the first Indian cricketer in history to hit two consecutive T20I centuries. However, in the next match, he bagged a 3-ball duck.
Not at all; I think it’s nothing to do with me - Gautam Gambhir
Speaking at a press conference, Gautam Gambhir said that Samson is shining because he has been provided backing by the management at the right number.
"Not at all; I think it’s nothing to do with me. I think it’s his ability. It was all about giving him the right number and backing him. I think, ultimately, it’s his hard work. What he is doing for Indian cricket is just the start; it’s not the end. Hopefully, he can continue taking this form forward," Gambhir said about Samson during India’s pre-departure press conference in Mumbai.
For me, I think the good sign is that some of the young players are really coming through - Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir further expressed his delight at seeing the young Indian cricketers succeed at the international level. He said that it is a good sign that Indian cricket is producing extremely talented young cricketers.
“For me, I think the good sign is that some of the young players are really coming through, which is always healthy and good for Indian cricket," he added.
Gambhir has already left for Australia with the first batch of the Indian team. After a setback against New Zealand in the home Test series, Gautam Gambhir would be hoping for a better performance from India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
