Former Indian assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has revealed that Rohit Sharma's preparations were keeping plans for the 2027 World Cup on the mind. Nayar, who was seen to be part of his training session, has reported that he wants to win the one he couldn't in India in 2023.
The India vs Australia white-ball series has finally arrived, and the Indian Men's Senior Selection Committee has announced the squad for the Men in Blue taking on the Men in Yellow. Australia are also revamping their ODI squad, with several greats having retired at the same time.
Rohit Sharma is in the ODI Squad, sacked as skipper
After much speculation and controversy surrounding the two greats of the game, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both were back in the Indian squad for the T20I series against Australia.
While Virat Kohli scored a dominating hundred, backed by another great knock against Australia in the Champions Trophy semi-final, Rohit Sharma shrugged off poor form with a match-winning 79 in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand.
Despite his unmatchable record, Rohit was snubbed from captaincy, and Shubman Gill was announced as the new captain of the Indian ODI side for the upcoming Australian tour. Rohit, though in the squad, is doubtful about continuing until the 2027 ICC World Cup, which was his major target for continuing in the 50-over format.
Abhishek Nayar made a massive revelation on the Indian skipper's resolute
As captain of the Indian side, Rohit Sharma led India to their two ICC titles in the T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025. He could not get his hands on only one of the limited-overs ICC titles, which was the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Having lost it in the final in 2023, Rohit looked determined to secure it in the next edition of the CWC in 2027. Since he would be 40 years old by that time and his questionable fitness often posed as a threat to his selection, Sharma resorted to a strong fitness regime under the watch of former teammate and friend Abhishek Nayar.
"He was working hard. His preparation was to reach the 2027 World Cup and make India proud, which they could not do in India last time. So I just hope that the communication went well and Rohit is on the same page as the selectors and the Indian team management," Abhishek Nayar remarked post Rohit's snub from captaincy.

Is Virat Kohli's participation in the 2027 CWC also uncertain?
Unlike Rohit, veteran batter Virat Kohli often has the reputation of being one of the fittest players in the history of the game. Neither Kohli's fitness nor his form would allow for his snub from the Indian ODI side.
Virat announced his retirement from the other two formats of the game on his own will but decided to continue in the one-day format. Though no clarity has been provided even on Virat's retention in the Indian team, it can be believed that his position is not under as much threat as the former skipper Rohit Sharma's.
