Australia cricketer Glenn Maxwell has said that the Indian Premier League (IPL) fast-tracked his international T20 career for Australia. Maxwell, who is part of Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2021, mentioned during RCB’s Twitter video that he has been a massive beneficiary of IPL. Maxwell has been part of the Indian Premier League since IPL 2013.

Maxwell made his ODI and T20I debut for Australia in 2012. The very next year in 2013, he made his Test debut. However, he earned a permanent place in the Australian team only after IPL 2014 edition. Glenn Maxwell scored 552 runs in 16 matches in IPL 2014 while playing for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). He came to the limelight during the IPL season due to his aggressive batting style.

IPL Gave Me Tag Of Sub-Continent Specialist: Glenn Maxwell

In the video, Maxwell explained how his good performance in IPL 2014 gave him a tag of sub-continent specialist in Australia. He also mentioned that IPL helped him to experience Indian conditions.

“I have been a massive beneficiary of the IPL. It has certainly fast-tracked my international T20 career, I have been able to experience the Indian conditions, we had an IPL in Dubai in 2014 and I was able to perform really well over there.

“After that, I got a bit pigeon-holed in Australia over being a sub-continent specialist. It got me a few ODIs and Test tours which I probably would not have been able to do if not for the IPL,” the right-handed batsman said.

Maxwell also shared his experience about his interaction with Sachin Tendulkar during his first year in IPL for Mumbai Indians in 2013.

“I still remember chatting with Sachin Tendulkar in my first year at the IPL, the fact the I was an Aussie, I joked with him, I think he liked that. He was brilliant in the sort of way he opened up his world. Every year you come to the IPL, it is a massive learning experience,” the 32-year-old Aussie further said.
