Australian legend Glenn Maxwell has retired from ODI cricket, but he continues to make himself available for his state team, Victoria, for the 50-over championship. He does not have a contract with Cricket Australia either.
Glenn Maxwell, who has played for years in the Australian 50-over side, recently announced his retirement from international cricket at the end of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. Maxwell's retirement brought an end to a career of 149 matches.
Having amassed 3990 runs in his career, mostly as a lower-order batter, Maxwell batted with a career strike rate of 126.70, alongside his four centuries, the majority of which came during the ICC tournaments for Australia. His legendary double century in the CWC 2023 would be considered one of the most iconic innings ever played in the history of 50-over World Cups.
Glenn Maxwell to star for Victoria despite ODI retirement
Despite having retired from 50-overs cricket internationally, Glenn Maxwell has claimed that he will be available to star for Victoria every time the team needs him to. However, he has no contract with the state team.
Despite his retirement announcement in June 2025, he played the One-Day championship for Victoria in the last season and also scored his first List A century against Queensland. He has, hence, denied a state contract with Victoria while living full-time in Queensland.
Glenn Maxwell, who turns 38 in October 2026, has no reason to take a state contract given that he is only a one-format player for Australia now. Maxwell has, anyway, expressed the desire to continue playing for Australia, though he will be 39 by the time of the LA Olympics and 40 by the next T20 World Cup in 2028.
Matthew Short denies state contract, all set to feature domestically for Victoria
Alongside Glenn Maxwell, another cricketer from Victoria, Matt Short, also lost his CA contract last month. He lost his place in the contracts after being dropped from Australia's T20 World Cup squad and was also on the verge of being snubbed from Australia's first-choice ODI side.
In recent times, there has been a trend of international players not binding themselves to state contracts, as they usually want to keep their schedules available for franchise cricket.
Short, now 30, played four Sheffield Shield matches and also five One-Day matches for Victoria last summer, but he missed the Shield final due to his commitments with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Short will continue to be available for Victoria across all formats.
Victoria added U19 players to their squad
Victoria have decided to make some massive calls on their Victoria squad for the upcoming One-Day championship. They have re-signed young guns like Fergus O'Neill and Campbell Kellaway during the season.
Australia's Under-19 representatives, like Tom Paddington and Aryan Sharma, have also been added to the rookie list and will be part of Victoria's state squad for the upcoming domestic season between 2026 and '27.
