Australia's latest teen sensation, Oliver Peake, is all set to make a historic debut. It was confirmed that the 19-year-old would take the field for Australia in their ODI against Pakistan on Saturday.
The match in Rawalpindi will be the first of three ODIs played in this series. Australia's stand-in captain, Josh Inglis, confirmed Peake's debut on Friday.
Peake will become the 252nd player to play ODI cricket for Australia and the youngest specialist batter.
Oliver Peake's career so far
While Peake hasn't made much of a mark in his brief senior professional career yet, he enjoyed tremendous success at the Under-19 level.
When Australia won the Under-19 World Cup in 2024, Peake made vital contributions in both the semi-final and the final while being just 17 years old.
In 2026, he led Australia to a semi-final finish. This year, Oliver Peake finished as Australia's second-highest run-getter at the tournament and made two centuries, including one in the semi-final, in which his team lost to England.
At the senior level, Oliver Peake has made 520 runs at an average of 26 in 13 First Class matches, 147 runs at 36.75 in 6 List-A matches, and 184 runs in 7 Big Bash League matches at a strike rate of 137.
Against the Perth Scorchers, Peake made an unbeaten 42 that included a six off the last ball of the match when his Melbourne Renegades needed 4 runs to win.
"He's been great to have around the group so far" - Inglis
Speaking to the media in Rawalpindi on Friday, Inglis confirmed that Oliver Peake will receive his Australia cap. Inglis said that the 19-year-old deserved to be with the senior side.
"I can confirm that Ollie Peake is going to make his debut tomorrow (Saturday), so it's incredibly exciting for Peakey," Inglis said from Rawalpindi.
"He's been a great value around the group already so far. We've seen what he's done over the last couple of years, and he really deserves to be here. So incredibly excited for him."
Inglis did not name the full XI, but confirmed that the right-arm seamer Billy Stanlake will play for his country for the first time since 2019.
"Billy Stanlake is going to be back in the side," Inglis said.
"I think it's a great story with Bill. He's not been around the group since 2019, so I think the resilience he showed to get back on the park and put in some good performances last year, he really deserves to be here."
Oliver Peake set to become the youngest batter to play for Australia
Oliver Peake will be 19 years and 261 days old when he makes his ODI debut for Australia on Saturday. This will make him the youngest specialist batter to play for the 'Kangaroos' ever.
The previous record belonged to the legendary Ricky Ponting, who was 20 years and 58 days old when he made his ODI debut back in 1995. Mitchell Marsh was 19 years and 364 days old when he made his debut in 2011, but played as an all-rounder.
Marsh was originally named captain for this series, but was ruled out because of an ankle injury.
Australia's youngest ODI debutant ever is their incumbent full-time skipper, Pat Cummins, who was 18 years and 164 days old when he made his debut. In fact, he and Marsh made their ODI debuts in the very same match, against South Africa at Centurion on October 19, 2011.
Cummins was rested for this series with his Test cricket workload in mind.
