Australia’s domestic team Victoria’s coach Chris Rogers feels that Glenn Maxwell does not require to be part of Sheffield Shield cricket to make a comeback in the Australia Test side. Sheffield Shield is a First-Class cricket competition in Australia in which teams from six states of the country take part. Due to international and IPL commitments this year, Maxwell could not find out time to represent the Victoria team in Sheffield Shield cricket.

Maxwell, who is a crucial player for Australia in ODI and T20Is, has only played 7 Test matches so far. However, Maxwell is keen to make a comeback in Test cricket and eyeing to play for Australia in the Test series against India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan slated to be held next year in 2022.

Would Like To See Glenn Maxwell Playing For Victoria: Chris Rogers

While talking to reporters, Former Australian cricketer Chris Rogers said that he would like to see Glenn Maxwell playing for Victoria next season.

“I’d like to think he’ll be a Victorian cricket player, for sure. As for the Australian side, having conversations with selectors, whether they pick him out of a Shield competition most likely for a series in India of whatever I’m not sure that’s necessarily required, it’ll definitely be horses for courses there”, Chris said.

Rogers also pointed out since conditions in Australia are different than the sub-continents, choosing a Test side on the basis of Sheffield Shield cricket is difficult.

“You’re not facing these conditions in Australia, so you’re probably not learning a whole lot off Sheffield Shield cricket in Australia. Not really getting a gauge on what guys are going to be like under that sort of pressure with the ball spinning square, keeping low, bouncing over your head.

“It’s just a different beast completely, so to be able to pick a Test side based on Sheffield Shield cricket it’s probably a little bit more difficult, I think you’ve got to go in with a lot more specialists, who can adapt to spinning conditions and find a way to score in those conditions as well,” Rogers further said.

All the 7 Test matches that Glenn Maxwell has played so far were played in Asia. He played four Tests against India, two against Bangladesh, and one against Pakistan. In 14 innings, the right-handed batsman has scored 339 runs along with a century. He last played in a Test match against Bangladesh in September 2017. Maxwell will be busy with IPL 2021 now as he is part of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the tournament.
