A huge shock has hit the IPL world as Glenn Maxwell suddenly finds himself without a team despite being one of the league’s most explosive all-rounders in the world’s best T20 league. Punjab Kings (PBKS) decided to release Glenn Maxwell ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, raising serious doubts about whether he will even feature in the next season of the tournament.

Maxwell was one of five players shown the door by PBKS, along with Josh Inglis, Aaron Hardie, Kuldeep Sen, and Pravin Dubey. But Maxwell’s release has created a massive buzz, especially because of how poor the Australian all-rounder’s last season turned out.

In IPL 2025, Maxwell scored only 48 runs in six innings at an average of just eight, while taking four wickets with an economy rate of 8.46 for the PBKS.

Following the retentions, Aakash Chopra has added fuel to the fire by suggesting that Maxwell might not find a buyer at all in the IPL 2026 auction. He even hinted that the all-rounder may not put his name on the auction list.

Aakash Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel, “They have said that they will let Maxwell go. Maxwell was for ₹4.20 crore. Mitchell Owen had come in his place. Mitchell Owen was retained, and Maxwell was let go. Is it the end of an era? Why am I saying it's an era? He has earned ₹101 crore from the IPL.”

The cricket pundit said that he won’t be shocked if this could mark the end of Maxwell’s long IPL journey. Despite earning over ₹100 crore across his IPL career, the Australian all-rounder’s form has dipped sharply, and PBKS choosing Mitchell Owen over him has only fueled speculation that teams might no longer see him as a match-winning option.

The former Indian batter further explained, “I don't grudge anybody's money. I want them to make ₹100 crore in one season. Players should get that kind of money because it's a multi-billion-dollar league. It's possible someone could be interested, and it's also possible no one could be interested. He might put his name, or he might not even put his name. So that's going to be an interesting one.”

Aakash Chopra shocked as PBKS released Josh Inglis

Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra has expressed his shock at the Punjab Kings’ surprising move to release Josh Inglis. However, the franchise made this decision after the head coach, Ricky Ponting, confirmed that Inglis would miss the entire season.

Since the PBKS side now has only a few gaps to fill, the commentator believes that they will need a reliable middle-order batter, and someone like Cooper Connolly could be an option. He also suggested that PBKS might look for a backup pacer and an Indian backup spinner.

With Xavier Bartlett, Lockie Ferguson, and Marco Jansen already in the squad, Chopra felt the PBKS’ core looks strong, and the franchise still has enough money to strengthen the remaining areas without major changes for the upcoming IPL 2026.

Notably, the Punjab Kings will enter the IPL 2026 auction with ₹11.50 crore left in their purse. With 21 players already in the squad, the PBKS can add only four more, and out of those, just two can be overseas players, so they will be aiming for a few impactful signings.
