The 37-year-old veteran Australian all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell, is reluctant to make any decisions on his future and has refused to rule out any possibility of playing for Australia in the 2028 LA Olympics. He was part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad for Australia that crashed out of the competition midway.

Glenn Maxwell's availability for Australia in the next big T20I tournaments has been under scrutiny, since the veteran match-winner will be turning 40 when Australia hosts the next T20 World Cup and competes in the Olympics just months before the World Cup in 2028.

He has signed a two-year deal with the Melbourne Stars in the BBL and will be seen playing in the upcoming seasons of the PSL and MLC as well. On the other hand, he will also play in the new Europe-based T20 league for a franchise that he partly owns.

"No need to make any sort of formal announcements," Glenn Maxwell denies any quick decision to end T20I career

After Australia's failed campaign at the ICC T20 World Cup, former Australian legend Ricky Ponting made a prediction that he won't be part of the playing XI for the Olympics and ICC T20 World Cup 2028. Australia are scheduled to play just 8 T20Is ahead of August 2027.

"I think not making a decision around my future was probably based more on what's to come over the next 12 months," Glenn Maxwell told reporters on Wednesday in Melbourne. He declared that he won't make any decisions on his future all of a sudden.

"There's not a whole lot of T20 cricket planned, so there's probably no need to make any sort of formal announcements, and just see how my body's going and see how I'm travelling, and if there are opportunities to play in the future, hopefully I'm fit and firing," he added.

The Australian all-rounder was asked about his wish to play in the Olympics and the T20 World Cup for Australia; he then claimed that he would surely play if his body and his form could hold up.

"Fit and firing? Hopefully," Maxwell said. "But yeah, not setting any dates.

"I felt like I got better and better throughout the World Cup. I probably judge it more on how I'm running around the field and how I'm feeling, probably more so than any statistics regarding wickets and runs," he added.

He then continued, "And I just felt like I was able to get through games a lot easier. Felt like I was playing my role as well as I could, and felt like I still had plenty to offer."

Glenn Maxwell's awful T20I form and next T20I assignments for Australia

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell produced the scores of 9, 31, and 22 in the T20 World Cup with an uncharacteristic score of 110.71. During this, he also scored the slowest 30+ score of his career. In the last 12 innings he played across T20 internationals and the BBL and averaged just 15.55 with a strike rate of 113.82.

Australia's upcoming T20I assignment will be against Bangladesh in a three-match series in June. He has already announced his retirement from the ODIs, and Maxwell cited that ahead of the 2027 World Cup, the Australian selectors will be giving emphasis on the 50-over format.

"We've had some discussions about what the next little bit looks like, and we'll continue to have really open and fluid discussions going forward," he said. "As I said, if I'm fit and firing and available, I'll be ready," Maxwell said, claiming that he has had talks with the national selectors.
