Melbourne Stars have announced they will be without their captain Glenn Maxwell for their second game in the ongoing Big Bash League. The Australia star has been sidelined with a muscle injury.

The World Cup winner played in the BBL opener between Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat on Thursday (December 6) in Brisbane. Glenn Maxwell led the Melbourne-based outfit but could not guide them to a win as they suffered a crushing 103-run defeat.

Asked to bat first, the Heat scored 214 for 3 in the allotted 20 overs thanks to Colin Munro’s brilliant knock of 99 runs not out. Munro looked set to complete a well-deserved century but was denied the opportunity in the final over when his teammate Max Bryant played the final three balls and hit all of them for a four. With the ball, Glenn Maxwell picked up 1 wicket although he ended up conceding 44 runs in 3 overs.

In reply, the Stars lost both of their openers for just 6 runs before Glenn Maxwell threatened to turn the game on its head. However, he could not last long and departed after scoring 23 runs off just 14 balls. The Stars were eventually all out for just 111 runs.

And while the star allrounder would have hoped to lead his team to a win in the second game against Perth Scorchers, he will have to watch the proceedings from the sidelines after picking up an injury in his forearm muscle. He suffered the injury whilst batting and will start his rehabilitation immediately.

“Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of Wednesday’s clash against the Perth Scorchers after injuring his forearm muscle. We’ll provide further updates as his recovery progresses,” the Stars said in a statement.

Fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile is also doubtful for the game after suffering a calf injury while bowling against the Heat. The pacer will undergo scans this weekend to determine the damage. The Stars are scheduled to lock horns against the Scorchers on Wednesday (December 13).
