Glenn Maxwell Steps Down As Melbourne Stars' Captain After A Poor Season As The Team Finishes Sixth On The Table

Glenn Maxwell has decided to step down from his captaincy role for the Melbourne Stars after the side’s final regular season game in the Big Bash League (BBL) 13. He informed his teammates of his decision to step aside from the leadership of the team after their game against Hobart Hurricanes on Monday at the MCG. The Stars lost the last three games of the season and missed the chance to qualify for the finals after a four-game winning streak.

Glenn Maxwell ultimately decided to leave the captaincy after the seven-run loss against the Hobart Hurricanes on the back of a loss to their rivals Melbourne Renegades in the derby match. The Melbourne Stars lost their first three games of the season and then made a comeback by winning four games on the trot. However, a loss in their last three games resulted in another disappointing campaign that saw them win just four of their 10 matches.

Glenn Maxwell took over the leadership role for Melbourne Stars in late 2018 following the departure of John Hastings, who had been in the position for a season after the retirement of David Hussey. Under Glenn Maxwell, the Melbourne Stars made it to the BBL decider in both 2018-19 and 2019-20, losing to the Renegades and Sydney Sixers respectively. Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes are the only two teams without a BBL title.

Glenn Maxwell Expressed His Disappointment With The Team

The 35-year-old Glenn Maxwell still has two seasons left in his contract with the Melbourne Stars but now he will be focusing on his batting and bowling and will support the new captain who is yet to be announced. This was the first season for Melbourne Stars under new coach Peter Moores, who was formerly in charge of England. Glenn Maxwell was disappointed with the team after their last game of the season.

“We left our run in someone else’s hands which is never what you want to do in this game,” Maxwell said. “We put ourselves in this position and we have to live with that now. After the first couple of years, having so much dominance and not being able to get over that final hurdle, it feels like the last four years out of finals contention is quite frustrating. We feel like we’ve had a good enough list, probably haven’t had enough luck with injuries and timing, replacements and it just all seems to compound on itself.”

Glenn Maxwell had a terrific campaign with Australia recently in the ODI World Cup where he scored a double century against Afghanistan and also helped the team in winning the title for the sixth time. However, his BBL campaign was disappointing with the Melbourne Stars and he would hope that his team succeeds in the next season.

Brisbane Heat, Sydney Sixers, Perth Scorchers, and Adelaide Strikers are the four teams qualified for the final round where the Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers will clash in the qualifier and the defending Champions Perth Scorchers will face Adelaide Strikers in the Knockout. The winner of the qualifier will book a place in the final whereas the loser will get another opportunity in the challenger round to qualify for the finals.
