Legendary Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has often been swapped between franchises in the IPL.

He has once again been released by his former franchise, the Punjab Kings, and is likely to get another new franchise after a team picks him out of the IPL 2026 mini-auction.

The IPL retentions were announced yesterday, as the Chennai Super Kings revealed that they had released many of their players, and hence, several spots were left vacant with a huge 40+ crores of purse money for CSK in the mini-auction.

Glenn Maxwell was once again released by his franchise, the Punjab Kings, after a poor season with the bat for them. The all-rounder who played in the PBKS middle order was one of the weakest limbs of the new dominating side of the IPL.

Glenn Maxwell to CSK is still a high possibility

Once Maxwell was released by the Punjab Kings, it was under speculation that he might be traded to the Chennai Super Kings, since the franchise needed an all-rounder, especially after letting go of their premier all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja.

Maxwell's age limit fits well with CSK's usual model of acquiring experienced players, and he would also add some grey hairs to their relatively younger squad. However, the trade between the two teams was not officially concluded, as a result of which Glenn Maxwell would once again be bid for at the mini-auction.

The CSK side, which has a huge purse to flaunt at the mini-auction, might be soliciting his services, while the likes of the Kolkata Knight Riders might also come into contention, especially after they let go of a huge tally of their overseas players.

Glenn Maxwell has played for five franchises in the IPL

The 37-year-old veteran Australian all-rounder is often considered a stalwart of International T20I cricket. He has also been playing in the IPL over several seasons since his first impressive season came back in 2014, while playing for the Punjab Kings.

He made his debut in the IPL back in 2012 for the Delhi Daredevils but gained limelight from the 2014 edition when he was the Punjab Kings' highest scorer and led the team into the finals. He also played a season for the Mumbai Indians in 2013.

In the 2014 IPL season, Glenn Maxwell amassed his highest run total to date, 552 runs in 16 matches. Top scoring with 95, the Australian maintained a huge strike rate of 187.75. After a major dip in form, he showed some resistance in 2017, before moving to the Delhi Daredevils again.

With repetitive flops, his only good season came with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021, when he scored 500+ runs for the second time in his career. Averaging 42.75 and striking below 145, this was Maxwell's best and most consistent season with the bat.

After two more good seasons, where Glenn Maxwell scored 1266 runs playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, he has had two unforgettable seasons in IPL 2024 and 2025, where he has averaged below double digits.

The Chennai Super Kings released some of their overseas players

The CSK team are known for holding on to their great talents, and hopefully, with some objectives, they have set free the likes of Matheesha Pathirana. Unlike Rachin Ravindra or Sam Curran, Pathirana performed better, though not by his standards.

The Chennai Super Kings released the likes of Rachin Ravindra, Matheesha Pathirana, and Sam Curran, as they would now have many overseas slots vacant to bring in the likes of all-rounder Glenn Maxwell.
