In a recent appearance at the MRF Pace Foundation, former legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath mentioned that Jasprit Bumrah probably needs an off-season to make a better comeback from his frequent injuries.
India has been severely worried by Jasprit Bumrah's unavailability on several crucial junctures of a match or a series. However, the great Bumrah's abilities have lacked in crucial games has led to big blows to the Indian team at times.
Bumrah receives backing from Aussie legend Glenn McGrath
In an era where cricket has an enduring toll on the players with so many new formats as well as so many franchise leagues, former Aussie great McGrath has revealed '99.9 per cent bowlers need an off-season to get strong again.’
He further added that India's best fast bowler and currently one of the greatest in the world, Jasprit Bumrah, needs a minimum of a season off to make a healthy comeback to any format of the game.
"His whole action is different from a lot of fast bowlers. He’s got a slow run-up, and the last few steps just really accelerate him through the crease. He’s got hyperextension, and he’s just got a great wrist."
"And the way he releases it is a fair bit closer to the batsman because of his technique than all other bowlers. So, there’s a lot that’s unique about him, but when he gets it right, it just all comes together well. He’s found what’s worked for him,” said McGrath on Bumrah.
Glenn McGrath reasons with Bumrah's frequent injuries
To no one's amazement, McGrath has revealed that Bumrah troubled his body with the bowling action he finds effective to baffle the batters with.
“Unfortunately, what he does is pretty tough on the body. Especially when you’re playing a lot of cricket, there’s no time to have an off-season."
"He really needs to get a lot stronger physically and fitter to put up with the stresses of fast bowling. And he needs an off-season. It will get him strong through the season,” said Glenn McGrath.
McGrath opposes limiting Bumrah to Test Cricket
The former Australian legend has spoken out against just limiting Bumrah to the red-ball format, citing his brilliance across the other two formats of the game.
Glenn McGrath has also pinned some responsibility on other Indian pacers, citing it to be their role to ensure pressure on the opposition in overs other than Bumrah, so bowling.
“You want your best bowler bowling. And he’ll want to bowl all the time. If he’s just bowling in short spells, then the batting team knows they just can get through the three or four overs and then they’re away."
"So it depends a lot on the other bowlers. You need another group of fast bowlers coming through to balance it out so that he doesn’t have to bowl long spells. You’ve got other bowlers bowling equally as well to carry the workload," Glenn McGrath added.
"You look at Bumrah, he’s so effective in ODI and T20 cricket. To limit himself to Test cricket would be a shame. But, he’s got to work out what’s best for him,” McGrath said.
