GT Picking Shubman Gill As Captain Over Kane Williamson Was Wrong Call? AB de Villiers Reacts

Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers expressed concerns about Shubman Gill being appointed as the captain of the Gujarat Titans for the IPL 2024 season. AB de Villiers highlighted that Kane Williamson would be an ideal candidate to lead the 2022 champions.

Shubman Gill has been named the captain of the Gujarat Titans for the next season. With Hardik Pandya returning to the Mumbai Indians, the franchise has appointed a new captain after a significant all-cash deal. Gill will collaborate with Ashish Nehra and Gary Kirsten.

It Might Have Benefitted Shubman Gill – Harsha Bhogle

Harsha Bhogle proposed the idea of Gill taking on the captaincy role in IPL 2025, emphasizing that playing under Kane Williamson at GT for a year could have been beneficial for him.

“I think life is moving a little too fast for Shubman Gill. He has had a great year as a batter and he needs to take that next step forward in the next few months with a test series in South Africa and a T20 World Cup where he has competition for his place. It might have benefitted him to be understudy to Kane Williamson for a year at GT with a view to being captain at IPL 2025,” Harsha Bhogle posted on X.

They Decided To Throw Him In As Captain – AB de Villiers

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, AB de Villiers expressed agreement with Harsha Bhogle’s perspective on Shubman Gill being appointed as a captain. However, Villiers expressed excitement to see Gill perform and lead the team in the upcoming season.

“I fully agree with Harsha Bhogle. Not that I doubt Shubman’s skill or ability as a leader, but the minute I saw Kane Williamson’s name as a retained player on the Gujarat Titans list, I thought there’s a fantastic opportunity to give an experienced player who’s done it before, who can play a rock-solid role up the order, an opportunity to captain,” AB de Villiers said.

“Give Shubman the opportunity to cement himself in all the formats in India cricket and to have another good season at the IPL. But they decided to throw him in as captain, and it may pay off. I’m not saying its wrong. It was a great opportunity for Shubman just to learn a little bit and to know the plan is for him to captain in 2025. Nonetheless, I’m excited to watch him perform and lead from the front.”
