The 2022 IPL champions, Gujarat Titans (GT), have reportedly become the first team to resume training following the suspension of the IPL 2025 season. Notably, the Gujarat squad has gathered at their home ground, Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad, with only a few overseas players absent.
The resumption of IPL 2025 is uncertain as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still finalizing plans and consulting with stakeholders, awaiting government approval. The tournament had been suspended for a week after Pakistan violated Indian airspace, which led organizers to halt the event.
Gujarat Titans Become First Team to Train Since IPL 2025 Suspension
The Gujarat Titans became the first team to resume training since the IPL 2025 suspension. According to Cricbuzz, their net session took place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and lasted for over three hours, from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
Both Indian and foreign players participated, including Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Sherfane Rutherford. Officials from both the team and the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) confirmed the details of the session.
"They were to disperse today but with the announcement of ceasefire and talk of an early resumption happening, they decided to stay on in Ahmedabad," GCA and GT members told Cricbuzz.
Gujarat Titans Assume the Top Spot in the Points Table
Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, are currently sitting at the top of the points table. After their victory over the Mumbai Indians on May 6, they have secured eight wins in 11 matches, with three losses. The team also boasts an impressive net run rate of +0.793.
Three Gujarat Titans players are among the top contenders in the race for the Orange Cap. Sai Sudharsan (509 runs), Shubman Gill (508 runs), and Jos Buttler (500 runs) are in second, third, and fifth, respectively.
Prasidh Krishna is leading the Purple Cap race with 20 wickets in the season so far. After missing the playoffs last season, the Gujarat Titans are aiming to secure another spot in the top four this season.
Ricky Ponting-Led PBKS Support Staff Remains in Delhi
After the suspension of the tournament, most foreign and domestic players returned home. However, all members of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) coaching staff, including Ricky Ponting, Brad Haddin, and James Hopes, decided to remain in India.
This contrasts with earlier reports from Dharamsala, which suggested that the Australian staff members were eager to leave due to the situation. The BCCI facilitated their stay by arranging a special train for the PBKS players, who traveled from Dharamsala to Delhi last Saturday.
Punjab are in third place on the points table with 15 points from 11 matches. The match between Punjab and Delhi Capitals (DC) was halted after one of the light towers malfunctioned. Both teams and their staff were escorted from the venue. The IPL then announced the suspension of the season for one week.
