Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer brutally punished by BCCI after MI's loss to PBKS in Qualifier 2

Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya and Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer breached the IPL Code of Conduct during Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, June 1. Both Hardik and Shreyas were fined for their teams' slow over rates during the recent match.
Punjab Kings secured a thrilling five-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025. The Shreyas Iyer-led side delivered a dazzling performance to seal their spot in the final. They will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), led by Rajat Patidar, at the same venue on Tuesday, June 3.
Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer Fined for IPL Code of Conduct Breach
The match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians was delayed due to unexpected rain in Ahmedabad right around the scheduled start time. However, with revised playoff rules allowing an additional two-hour window, the full 20-over match started at 9:45 PM.
Following the game, the IPL governing council fined both captains for slow over rates. Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya were penalized, as confirmed in an official statement.
"Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during Qualifier 2 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad," it said in a statement.
"Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has also been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate," the statement further added.
Hardik Pandya Fined ₹30 Lakh for Third Slow Over-Rate Offence
Punjab Kings maintained their second slow-over rate offence in the IPL 2025 season, resulting in a fine of ₹24 lakh for captain Shreyas Iyer. Under the IPL’s Code of Conduct, the rest of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each fined either ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee.
"As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser."
Notably, this was the third slow-over rate breach of the season for the Mumbai Indians. Hardik Pandya was fined ₹30 lakh. The other MI players, including the Impact Player, were each fined either ₹12 lakh or 50% of their match fee.
"The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 12 Lakh or 50 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser."
Shreyas Iyer’s Key Role in Punjab Kings’ Qualifier 2 Victory
After being asked to bat, Mumbai Indians posted 203 runs for the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav (44 off 26), Tilak Varma (44 off 29), Jonny Bairstow (38 off 24), and Naman Dhir (37 off 18) played key roles for Mumbai.
In the chase, Shreyas Iyer scored an unbeaten 87 off 41 balls, steering Punjab Kings to a comfortable victory in 19 overs.
Notably, Punjab Kings became the first team in IPL history to successfully chase a total over 200 against Mumbai Indians. This win also marks PBKS’s first appearance in an IPL final since 2014.
