Former England captain Michael Vaughan has made a bold statement on Hardik Pandya’s future with Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). After another disappointing IPL season, the future of Hardik Pandya with the franchise has now become a huge talking point.

Mumbai Indians (MI) had brought Hardik back before IPL 2024 and even handed him the captaincy after removing Rohit Sharma from the role. But since then, things have not really gone MI’s way. They finished at the bottom in 2024 and then reached Qualifier 2 in 2025, and this season, they were knocked out of the playoff race in the ongoing 2026 season.

Michael Vaughan wants the Mumbai Indians to move on from Hardik Pandya

After MI’s another defeat in the ongoing IPL 2026 against KKR, Michael Vaughan has made a shocking suggestion that the Mumbai Indians should move on from Hardik before the next season and try rebuilding the team with a fresh approach.

Vaughan has pointed out that MI’s dressing room currently has too many strong personalities, which has made things more complicated for Pandya.

Michael Vaughan said on Cricbuzz: “Release him. I have seen enough. I didn't really see the dynamic of bringing him back. He was doing a good job with the Gujarat Titans and won a title there with a different set of players and a different coach. I feel Mumbai has got too many chefs in the kitchen, so I'd take one chef out.”

Replace Hardik Pandya with Cameron Green: Michael Vaughan

Vaughan also suggested the Mumbai Indians trade Hardik Pandya to KKR and bring Cameron Green back ahead of the IPL 2027 mega auction.

The cricket pundit added, “Replace him with Cameron Green. If he wants to carry on as captain, then he'd better be with a fresh set of captains. Maybe KKR. Maybe they're going to look for a captain as well. That's why Cameron comes to Mumbai; someone else will captain Mumbai. Hardik goes to KKR, a fresh start for him as captain.”

Joy Bhattacharjya says Hardik-MI partnership has failed

Meanwhile, former KKR team director Joy Bhattacharjya also feels that the Hardik-Mumbai partnership is no longer helping either side.

Bhattacharjya said, “Release him. He has had three seasons with him, and clearly the experiment hasn't worked. It doesn't make sense. It will be difficult for him to play just as a player. It will be better for both Mumbai and Hardik.”

It is being said that Ajinkya Rahane could be one of the three captains who may lose captaincy after this season. However, Cameron Green is unlikely to be released by the KKR. The Australian all-rounder was bought for a huge amount of INR 25.20 crore last year.

Green had a poor start to IPL 2026 but later made a strong comeback. So far, he has scored 316 runs in 13 innings with two half-centuries and also taken seven wickets for the KKR. While MI crashed out of the playoff race, KKR also almost lost the playoff chance despite a late fightback this season.
