Chief selector Wahab Riaz revealed that Haris Rauf had initially agreed to play Tests for Pakistan but withdrew from the Australia tour at the last moment. Riaz highlighted that Rauf’s decision would hurt Pakistan cricket.
“We spoke to Haris Rauf for this tour. When we spoke to him two days ago, he gave his consent to play Test cricket for Pakistan. But last night he changed his mind, and now he doesn’t want to be part of this Test series. I think this will hurt Pakistan cricket. I’m revealing this because we should be honest with officials, team-mates, and the public,” Wahab said.
Haris Rauf Considers Retirement Amid Criticism
According to a Cricket Pakistan report, Haris Rauf was disheartened by criticism and also considered international retirement. However, the 30-year-old fast bowler reconsidered and shifted his focus back to his cricketing career after consulting with friends.
The report stated that former director Mickey Arthur tried to convince Rauf to join the Australia tour after the World Cup. Arthur expressed a strong desire to witness Rauf in Test matches against Australia, describing him as a key asset due to his exceptional pace.
However, Haris Rauf consistently declined proposals, citing limited experience in first-class cricket. The pacer also expressed concerns about potential injuries. Rauf emphasized the need for careful consideration due to anticipated challenges during Test matches.
Rauf had a disappointing Test debut against England in December 2022, securing only one wicket with figures of 1/78 in 13 overs during the first innings. He took 32 scalps in nine first-class games at an average of 29.21. Additionally, he registered subpar performances in the 2023 World Cup, taking 16 wickets at an economy rate of 6.74.
Haris Rauf Shines With Ball For Pakistan In Second T20I Against New Zealand
Haris Rauf is currently part of the Pakistan squad in the ongoing five-match series in New Zealand. He delivered an impressive performance in the second T20I at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday. He registered impressive bowling figures of 3/38 in his four overs.
However, the visiting team failed to chase down the target of 195 runs in the second encounter. They were bundled out for 173 runs in 19.3 overs, suffering their second consecutive defeat in the series. The Shaheen Afridi-led team conceded a 2-0 lead to the home team.
