Former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir has been ruling the headlines ever since he guided his beloved franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), to their third IPL triumph after more than a decade.
The KKR had defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024 Final to clinch the title. After his successful comeback to KKR, Gambhir, renowned for his strategic acumen and leadership, has been tipped as the top contender to replace Rahul Dravid as Team India's next head coach.
His potential transition into the Indian cricket team coaching role comes on the back of KKR's stellar IPL 2024 season, which saw them emerge as champions under his mentorship. The former World Cup winner’s influence was particularly highlighted by KKR pacer Harshit Rana amidst talks of Gambhir taking over as India’s head coach next month.
Harshit Rana hails Gautam Gambhir’s dedication and contribution to KKR's IPL 2024 Win
Rana credited Gambhir's dedication and sacrifices for the team's success in the IPL 2024. Rana, who played a key role in KKR’s title-winning campaign with 19 wickets in 13 matches, becoming the joint-second-leading wicket-taker for the champions, recently shared his insights on Gambhir's contributions to the team’s success on Shubhankar Mishra's podcast, 'Unplugged'.
He revealed that Gambhir had made a lot of sacrifices, including leaving politics, to focus entirely on KKR’s campaign to help them win the trophy. His commitment and hard work were crucial in guiding the Kolkata team to victory in the IPL 2024.
The IPL 2024 victory has not only cemented Gambhir's legacy as a successful IPL mentor, having already helped Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to playoffs back-to-back seasons but also positioned him as a strong candidate for the Indian head coach position. The BCCI is expected to make a decision soon, and Gambhir's name is reportedly expected by many.
As Gambhir potentially prepares to take on this new challenge with his strategic mindset and ability to inspire players, making him a suitable successor to Dravid, Rana said that the KKR mentor deserves all credit and that the team should be known as Gambhir’s team, and there is nothing wrong with that.
“Gambhir Bhaiya left his political career for KKR: Harshit Rana
Actually, Shubhankar Mishra asked Rana about his thoughts on people being called KKR as Gambhir’s team with the skipper Shreyas Iyer not getting that much credit. The star pacer also cited the example of a few teams like CSK and RCB, which are known for MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli’s teams, and asked how right and wrong it is for KKR to be called KKR Gambhir’s team. Rana’s response is going viral.
Harshit Rana said on the podcast: “Gambhir Bhaiya left his political career and everything behind for KKR. He left politics and came back to KKR, and he worked day and night hard just to make KKR win the trophy. He is so involved in KKR. I am genuinely telling you that he did his best to win this trophy. He left everything just to win the KKR trophy. So, sir, why shouldn't he get this honour?"
