The 22-year-old India National Cricket Team opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal has said that the innings that he played on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh will help him become an even stronger player.
Jaiswal showcased sheer class at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai, on Thursday, September 19, and changed his approach to helping India get out of trouble.
The left-handed batter usually looks to launch an attack on the opposition with his aggressive batting, but the situation didn't allow him to play his natural game against Bangladesh as Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0), and Virat Kohli (0) got out early.
Yashasvi Jaiswal batted cautiously after three star batters were back in the hut and stitched a great 62-run partnership with Rishabh Pant to bring momentum back towards India. He also added a great 48 runs with KL Rahul.
Jaiswal was eventually dismissed by the tall pacer Nahid Rana on the fourth ball of the 42nd over. He finished his innings at the score of 56 and he collected those runs off 118 balls while hitting 9 boundaries.
Speaking after the end of the first day's play, he said that playing in different types of situations will help him improve his game and become a better player.
"It was amazing to go out there and play in these conditions. It will make me strong and I will learn from it as to how to play in all these conditions and how to plan my innings," Yashasvi Jaiswal told reporters in the post-day press meet, as quoted by PTI.
"I try to bat according to the requirements of my team and keep changing my game accordingly. If the wicket falls initially, how can I bat? When the runs are coming, how can I bat?" he added.
I think he definitely bowled well but, at times, he also gave loose balls - Yashasvi Jaiswal on Hasan Mahmud
Yashasvi Jaiswal also revealed that the track at Chepauk was providing enough assistance to bowlers initially, because of which they had to be cautious with their approach.
"Initially, I think the ball was moving a bit and seaming a bit and the wicket was a bit down. So, we took our time. But if you see in the last session, we scored quite well and I think we are in a good position at the moment," Yashasvi Jaiswal said.
"I think the wicket was a bit helpful initially and if you look at the weather, it was a bit cloudy. But we were trying to go through that period by playing safe."
Yashasvi Jaiswal further denied labeling Hasan Mahmud as a big threat to India and said that he gave loose balls at times. Notably, Mahmud ran through the Indian top order by dismissing Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant.
"I think he definitely bowled well but, at times, he also gave loose balls on which we scored runs. We were just talking about how we can use our feet.
"We were trying to see if there is a loose ball to score runs and was looking to make a partnership and play as long as we can," he said.
