Shardul Thakur has gone from strength to strength in the past few months and is now a contender for the spot in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup.

He has at least now become the first-choice backup bowler in case the regular pacers are unavailable. He made his comeback in the national side in December 2019, after a gap of more than a year.

Since then, as India missed its regular pacers for some reason, Shardul Thakur has played more games than he was benched for. He featured in all 8 white-ball matches – 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs – in New Zealand at the start of last year. He played in one ODI and 2 T20Is against Australia.

While he was chipping in with wickets in those matches, his breakthrough match came in Brisbane – the fourth and series-deciding Test against Australia. In absence of all the first-choice pacers, Shardul Thakur made it into the Test eleven – his second Test match, after a gap of two years.

The right-hander made most of the opportunity making massive impacts with both bat and ball, showing his character and cricket skills, and helped India win the game and the series.

Riding on the confidence, the Palghar-born was featured and bowled with gumption in the 8 white-ball games at home against England. He returned with 15 wickets and changed the course of the game at times, earning rich praises from all corners.

Discussion with Sachin Tendulkar has helped a lot: Shardul Thakur

Shardul Thakur reveals that Sachin Tendulkar had earlier advised him about his bowling. The 29-year-old says that the legend’s suggested he work on certain lines and lengths, which has now been very helpful for the Chennai Super Kings pacer.

“I think it was just before our Ranji Trophy final or maybe we won the Ranji Trophy final and we came back fresh for another season. I was discussing something with Sachin Paaji. He was explaining to me the lines and he just went into flashback and he told me that you don’t remember I had told you about certain line and length and certain skillsets, so keep doing that.

“He said whenever you find time, apart from your match practice, keep practicing, keep working hard. I think it has helped a lot,” Shardul Thakur revealed in a video shared by the CSK on their Twitter handle.
