Dinesh Lad, the childhood coach of Rohit Sharma, is confident that his student will overcome the challenging swinging and seaming conditions in England on his upcoming tour to the UK.

Rohit Sharma’s Test career revived in 2019 when he was promoted to open – as his white-ball career in 2013 – in the home Test series against South Africa. The right-hander whacked 3 hundreds, including a double hundred, in the series. He fared decently in Australia as well, before taking on the England bowlers in spin-friendly conditions at home.

Dinesh Lad opines that while the opener would have to endure difficulties while facing the bowlers in England – for the WTC final versus New Zealand and the 5-Test series against England. However, Lad says, if Rohit Sharma focusses harder, and practices well in the nets, he would make hay in the 6 Tests.

“He just has to focus harder there, play every ball to its merit because there will be significant movement. But talking about the recent home series against England on turning tracks, Rohit played proper cricketing shots while others seemed to struggle. So I am sure he will adjust his game in England as well because it’s all about adjusting to different conditions at the highest level,” Dinesh Lad told Sportskeeda.

“Yes, he might face some problems because the ball swings in England more than in any other country and you have to be extremely focused in order to handle that movement. But if he faces the quality bowlers that India have during net sessions or intra-squad matches, then it might help him to acclimatise to the conditions better,” he added.

Rohit Sharma can’t afford to throw his wicket away: Dinesh Lad

Although Rohit Sharma currently averages 64.38 as a Test opener and is in the form of his life, he was guilty of throwing his wicket away in Australia and has been a case at times in his white-ball career as well.

Dinesh Lad reckons the opener can’t afford to do the same mistake in England where the stakes would be huge once again. With the side and form, India has a chance to make history by winning the inaugural ICC WTC and register series triumph in England as well after Australia earlier in the year.

“Even in Australia earlier this year, the way he batted caught everyone’s eye and he made shot-making look so easy while playing the fast bowlers. He never seemed like getting out, but again, there were a few innings where he threw his wicket away. He can’t afford to do that this time around,” Lad further commented.
