Heather Knight calls time on illustrious international career

The India Women’s National Cricket Team is currently facing the England Women’s National Cricket Team at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, London. India have a good lead over the home side. During the game, former England captain Heather Knight called off her glorious career after this one-off Test against India. She announced her retirement from international cricket.

In the match, Heather Knight scored just 6 runs in the first innings as she was dismissed by Sayali Satghare. She has been one of the finest cricketers in England cricket history. Knight joined her long-time teammate Tammy Beaumont in retirement. The latter also announced her retirement before the Test match.

Heather Knight stated via the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) that she is grateful to be a part of the team and also the journey. She also stated that it is very difficult to move away from the game, which has been with her for 16 long years.

"I'm extremely grateful and privileged to have gone on the journey that I have been on as an England cricketer," Knight said in a statement by the ECB."

"It's hard to walk away because the dressing room and the people in the dressing room have been a constant in my life for 16 years, and the memories and the experiences and the people have helped shape me become who I am today, but I'm really content with this decision and I'm really excited for what's next."

Heather Knight has played more Tests, ODIs, and T20Is than any other England female cricketer. She debuted for England in 2010. She took over the captaincy from Charlotte Edwards in 2016. She led England 199 times before she stepped down as captain last year.

"I've been lucky to play with some amazing cricketers, and some amazing people who have taught me a lot, inspired me and supported me throughout my career. I want to say a huge thank you to my teammates, coaches and support staff."

"I'd like to specifically give the medical staff a shout out as well. I'm not sure how this body has got through 300-odd games of cricket. It's taking a lot of patching up and hard work on their part and I owe them one."

Heather Knight's World Cup Career

Heather Knight had a glorious ODI World Cup career, featuring for England in four tournaments, including the memorable title-winning campaign in 2017. During her World Cup appearances, she established herself as one of England's most consistent batters, finishing as the team's third-highest run-scorer in both ODI and T20 World Cup history.

In 2020, Knight made history as the first England cricketer, male or female, to hit an international century in all three formats, solidifying her position as one of the country's finest batters and leaders.

"As a team, we've shared some special moments with the fans over the years and I want to thank everyone who has supported and given their love to the women's game," she added. "Watching this great game grow has been the greatest privilege of my life."
