Yashasvi Jaiswal blasted by Michael Vaughan over Brisbane Test failure: "Just trying to take out Mitchell Starc"

Former England captain Michael Vaughan took a dig at young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal during Day 3 of the third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. However, former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri was surprised by Michael Vaughan's criticism of Yashasvi Jaiswal's dismissal.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed cheaply in India's first innings of the all-important Test at the Gabba on Monday, December 16. Mitchell Starc dismissed the left-handed batter on the second delivery of India's first innings. Jaiswal flicked a ball off his pads, but it went straight to Mitchell Marsh at mid-wicket.

Before India’s innings, Jaiswal had a humorous moment during warm-ups. The young Indian batter was seen practicing with throwdowns. Jaiswal flicked a delivery off his legs, accidentally hitting a Cricket Australia cameraman near the Australian players’ huddle. The Australian Test players jumped in surprise.

Michael Vaughan, who was on the commentary panel, took a sly dig at Yashasvi Jaiswal following his dismissal. Vaughan mentioned that Jaiswal had practiced a flawless shot in warm-ups but suggested that the pressure of the game led to the mistake, as he played the same shot aerially during the match.

“Five minutes before Jaiswal got out, this is the shot he practiced that whip through mid-wicket, wonderful shot and good balance. And then you go into the match and it’s the same shot but he goes aerial, just flicks it. It was the pressure of the game, in practice it’s perfect,” said Vaughan.

Michael Vaughan joked that Jaiswal was trying to take out Mitchell Starc before the game even started. Ravi Shastri, who was also surprised by the dismissal, agreed with Vaughan. Shastri pointed out that there were acres of space on the on-side, but Jaiswal hit it straight to the fielder.

“That’s one way of getting ahead of the game… he’s just trying to take out Mitchell Starc before the game starts,” Vaughan said.

“Can you imagine the catch would be there? The man just in front of square, acres of space on the on side and Jaiswal hits it straight to the fielder,” said the former Indian player and coach.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has struggled in the three Tests, with scores of 0, 0, 4, and 24, except for his 161 in the second innings at Perth, where India beat Australia by 295 runs in the series opener. Mitchell Starc took his 12th wicket of the series and dismissed Jaiswal three times.

India’s top-order collapsed at 48/4 in their first innings at the Gabba. Jaiswal and Shubman Gill were dismissed by Starc, and Virat Kohli was removed by Josh Hazelwood. After a rain delay, Rishabh Pant was also dismissed. At tea, KL Rahul was unbeaten on 30, while Rohit Sharma had yet to score.
