India National Cricket Team top-order batsman Shubman Gill was hopeful that his father would be proud of his efforts with the bat in the fifth and final Test of the series against England National Cricket Team at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala.

Gill was going through a lean patch heading into the England Test series and there were even calls to drop him after he failed in his first three innings against England. However, Gill smashed a fantastic 104 in Visakhapatnam to send a message to the team management and the selectors that he is the one for the future and that leaving him out of the team won’t be a wise decision.

The right-handed batsman since then has been chipping in with crucial runs and he is currently the second-highest run-getter in the ongoing five-match Test series. In 9 innings, he has scored 452 runs at an amazing average of 56.50.

In the Dharamsala Test, Gill looked class apart and he batted with a positive intent against the English bowling unit. He was part of a tremendous 171-run stand with skipper Rohit Sharma and completed his century off 137 balls.

Shubman Gill’s stay in the middle ended when he was cleaned up by a James Anderson jaffa in the 63rd over after scoring 110 runs off 150 balls with 12 fours and 5 sixes. After smashing a century, the top-order batsman was proud of himself and was expecting the same from his father, who has provided him with all the support in the world throughout his journey.

It was my first time that he’s watching me play in an international game – Shubman Gill

Speaking after the match, Shubman Gill expressed hope to see his father being proud of his magnificent ton in the fifth Test. He said:

“It was my first time that he’s (talking about his dad) watching me play (in an international game). It was his vision (to play Test cricket) and I’m hoping that he is proud of my effort today.”

Shubman Gill played a terrific shot off James Anderson for a six that stunned Ben Stokes on Day 2. The clip of his boundary went viral on social media and after the end of the play, he was asked to share his thoughts on it. Shubman Gill also refused to reveal his chat with James Anderson after the mighty six. He elaborated:

“I thought the ball wasn’t doing much at that time and instinctively I wanted to go over the top (talking about the six he hit against Anderson) and put some pressure on him. I feel good every time I go out to bat and today I missed out on that ball (the one he got dismissed). I didn’t sight that ball properly, but I do feel good every time I go out to bat and hopefully I convert these starts into a big one. I think it would be better for both of us to keep that chat between us (when asked about the conversation between him and Anderson after the latter was taken for a six).

At stumps on Day 2, India National Cricket Team were at 473/8 in 120 overs and were leading by 255 runs. Kuldeep Yadav (27) was unbeaten in the middle along with Jasprit Bumrah (19) and they will be looking forward to increasing India’s lead to at least 300 runs.
