Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir has formally applied for the post of Team India's head coach after appearing for the interview on Tuesday (June 18).

The World Cup-winning cricketer is the frontrunner to replace Rahul Dravid as the new coach. Dravid's tenure will come to an end later this month after the conclusion of the ongoing T20 World Cup. As per reports, former India cricketer WV Raman was also interviewed by the BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).

The CAC comprises former India cricketers Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik. According to media reports, both candidates appeared for the interview virtually. The CAC asked Gambhir and Raman three very specific questions as they wanted to know the roadmap both the former cricketers have for the team in the coming years.

According to RevSportz, the CAC asked Gambhir and Raman about the coaching staff of the team, their plans on dealing with the aging stars of the team such as Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, and views on split captaincy as well as on workload management and the team's failure to win ICC competitions in recent years.

Here are the three questions asked by the CAC:

  • What are your ideas regarding the coaching staff of the team?
  • With a few aging players in both the batting and bowling departments, how will you handle the transition phase?
  • What are your views on split captaincy, fitness parameters concerning workload management, and addressing the team's failure to win ICC trophies?

Another round of interviews is expected to take place before the CAC takes the final call.

"Yes, Gambhir appeared for the interview with the CAC. One round of discussions happened today. There is another round expected tomorrow," a BCCI source told PTI.

"Raman was interviewed after Gambhir. It was also on zoom. He also gave his presentation on his vision and road map on Indian cricket. The interview went for around 40 minutes. There were some initial questions by the committee before they looked at the presentation," the source added.

Gautam Gambhir ahead of WV Raman:

PTI further reported that both Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman gave very impressive presentations but the former is likely to replace Dravid as India's next head coach. Gambhir had emerged as the favorite even before the interview took place.

According to reports, the BCCI had talked to him while he was plying his trade as the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024. Gambhir is yet to coach a state or national team but has managed to make a big impression with his coaching stints in the IPL. On the other hand, Raman was the head coach of the India women's team from December 2018 to May 2021.
