Steve Smith suffers a colossal injury scare

Steve Smith recently injured his little finger while fielding in the slips during the WTC Final against the South Africa National Cricket Team at Lord's.

Thankfully, he avoided the surgery despite suffering a nasty-looking compound dislocation of his right little finger, but was asked to wear a splint for eight weeks.

Smith missed the first Test against the West Indies, but achieved fitness for the second match. He wore a thin splint on his finger while batting and didn't field in the slips.

However, he suffered a major injury scare when a ball from Alzarri Joseph reared up from hard length, seamed back into his body sharply, and hit his little finger.

Although Steve Smith didn't feel any instant pain, he removed his gloves after the next ball and was in significant pain when he looked to flex the finger.

The Aussie physio was forced to arrive in the middle to check on Smith, and after some time, the batter was good to continue. Smith scored an excellent 71 runs off 119 balls, with 7 fours and 1 six, in the innings and played a key role in Australia taking a 254-run lead at the end of Day 3.

My first ball hit me straight on the finger - Steve Smith

Speaking to the broadcaster after Day 3, Smith revealed that the blow he took on his finger did trouble him, but he is alright.

“My first ball hit me straight on the finger. It was not ideal but it feels alright. It is that kind of surface."

While talking about the pitch for the second Test match, Steve Smith said that it is quite a tricky one to bat on and will get more difficult as the match progresses.

“Some can shoot up, you might have to take a few on the hands, but it is all good. We are in a nice spot. It was a tricky surface – little up and down, little bit of seam movement. Don’t think the wicket is going to get any better, will probably do a few more tricks,” he said.

Tried to cash in on anything loose - Steve Smith

Smith further revealed how he made adjustments to his batting to achieve success on a difficult surface. He said:

“Decided to bat on middle stump, stay still and negate lbw as much as possible, and try to use the full face of the bat as much as possible. Tried to cash in on anything loose to put the pressure back on the bowler."

At the end of play on Day 3, Australia were at 221/7 with Alex Carey (26*) and Pat Cummins (4*) in the middle, and they are aiming to post a target of around 300 runs for the hosts, said Smith.

“The new ball is going to be pretty crucial for us. Hopefully we can get up to somewhere around 300 and then we’ll see how it goes,” Smith stated.
