The ongoing turmoil in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) refuses to die down. PCB chief Zaka Ashraf continues to hog the limelight for all the wrong reasons. PCB officials have reportedly expressed their discontent over Zaka Ashraf’s extension as chairman of the board in the latest development.

In July, he was approved as head of the PCB by former Pakistan PM Shahbaz Sharif for a period of four months after Najam Sethi resigned from the position. The four-month deadline to hold elections for a new board of governors and a new chairman expired on November 5.

However, the Pakistan government has handed Zaka Ashraf a three-month extension. The patron of the board and current interim prime minister of Pakistan Anwar ul Haq Kakar’s decision was confirmed through an official government notification. The notification stated that the government has “approved extension of three months in tenure period of present Management Committee w.e.f 5th November 2023.”

PCB officials against Zaka Ashraf:

While Zaka Ashraf is set to be the PCB chief for at least three more months, the decision of the Pakistan government has reportedly not gone down well with other officials. According to a report in Cricket Pakistan, most of the officials have expressed disapproval of the extension. Most of the high-ranking officials expressed support for the previous management.

The officials were hopeful of Sethi returning as the chairman once again. The report further stated that one high-ranking official even told his coworkers that he would step down if Ashraf was granted an extension. Ashraf’s authority also remains significantly diminished as he does not have the backing of most of the officials.

He recently grabbed the headline for another unwanted reason. Ex-Pakistan cricket Rashid Latif sensationally claimed that Ashraf was not responding to captain Babar Azam’s messages and calls. The PCB chief, however, rejected the claim although he faced severe criticism. Talking about the Pakistan cricket team, they are currently in India for the ongoing World Cup.
