Team India have won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, beating New Zealand in the final of the tournament. They became the first team to win the World Cup at home and also the first team to win two back-to-back T20 World Cup titles. Under Gautam Gambhir, this is the second ICC trophy for the team after they won the Champions Trophy last year.
Since Gautam Gambhir joined as head coach of the side, the Men in Blue have been amazing in ICC tournaments and Asia Cups. They have been one of the most formidable sides in the white-ball format at present. Gautam Gambhir, as a head coach, a player, and a mentor, has never lost a single ICC knockout match.
Is Gautam Gambhir India's greatest coach?
Gambhir’s perfect record continued in the T20 World Cup as well. Despite winning two ICC trophies in two years, GG has been criticised for his straightforward and blunt approach. There have been rumours of his distant relationship with senior cricketers like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The two stalwarts of Indian cricket now play only the ODI format.
There have been reports that Gambhir does not want Virat and Rohit to play the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, the team India head coach has shut down all the rumours in the ongoing Traiblazers event organised by RevSportz. He talked about how he is human, and he is allowed to make mistakes.
I should be allowed to make mistakes: Gautam Gambhir
On being asked by Boria Majumdar, ‘There has been a lot of outside noise and social media chatter suggesting that the head coach is against senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.’
‘There was also a tweet from you earlier mentioning that people are trying to put players against you. Since you all share the same dressing room and are working together to win matches for India, how do you deal with such speculation and pressure?’
Gambhir replied, "Look, you made a valid point that I’m human. Yes, I’m human, and I should be allowed to make mistakes. Just like anyone else, players should also be allowed to make mistakes. I’m sure I must have made mistakes in the last 18 months, and I don’t shy away from that."

I believe I’m doing a fair job- Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir has been that outright person who never shies away from backing his players and also maintains a strict dressing room. Though his main challenge has been Test cricket, where he has failed after losing two back-to-back home series. However, the intent of winning games has not been far from the side.
Gambhir further added, "But I’ve always believed in one thing: a wrong decision with the right intent is acceptable, but a wrong decision with the wrong intent is absolutely not acceptable in that dressing room. Everyone should be allowed to make mistakes. Why shouldn’t cricketers be allowed to make mistakes? They’re humans too."
"For me, it’s very simple. As long as I’m doing everything with honesty and I’m honest with everyone in that dressing room—from the masseur to the assistant coach—I can look them in the eye and talk to them honestly. If I can do that, I believe I’m doing a fair job in my position. Over the last 18–20 months of my tenure, that’s something I can live with."
