Indian bowler Varun Chakravarthy revealed that he had called wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik a day before his international debut.
The 29-year-old Chakravarthy, who impressed everyone with his mysterious bowling in IPL, made his debut in T20I against Sri Lanka on July 25 at R, Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
I called Dinesh Karthik and he shared with me inputs on where to bowl: Varun Chakravarthy
Chakravarthy shared the incident when he called his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) teammate Karthik as he was doing commentary for the official broadcasters in England and witnessed the Sri Lanka-England series in June from the commentary box.
Chakravarthy said that his former KKR skipper did give him some inputs for bowling against the Sri Lankan batters.
“I called him the day before the match and asked him because he was commentating on the England-Sri Lanka series also. He did give me a few inputs. He shared his observations on where to bowl and how to bowl and how the Sri Lankan players play and those kinds of things.” Chakravarthy told ESPNCricinfo.
I had a sleepless night before the match: Varun Chakravarthy
Chakravarthy, who could only manage to pick two wickets from three matches he played, asserted that it was an emotional moment for him to receive his India cap and he was also nervous before the start of the game, where he couldn’t even sleep a day before his game.
“Paras Mhambrey [bowling coach] gave me the cap and it was a very emotional moment for me. It felt like it was a dream come true and it was what I’ve been wanting for a long time. Obviously, there was responsibility, but I wasn’t blinded by all those emotions and just kept myself in the present,” Chakravarthy said.
“I had nerves at the start because it was my first match. I had a sleepless night before the match, but everything settled down once I got into the game,” he added.
Varun Chakravarthy had mentioned that his aim is to push IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders to qualify for the playoffs and he isn’t worried about his selection for the Indian team in the T20 World Cup.
