Varun Chakravarthy is a right-arm spinner who bowls leg spin. He first gained popularity with his stint in Tamil Nadu Premier League. Later, he gained popularity with his performance for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL.

Early Life and Career

Varun Chakravarthy was born in Bidar City in Karnataka to Vinod and Malini Chakravarthy. Later, he shifted to Chennai with his family where he underwent his education. He has a degree in architecture. He tied the knot with Neha Khedekar in 2020.

In 2018, the right-arm spinner captured a spot in the Tamil Nadu domestic team. In 2019, Punjab Kings bought him in an IPL 2020 auction. Later, Kolkata Knight Riders picked him in the 2020 season and have retained him over the years.

International Career

Interestingly, Varun Chakravarthy has also played a few international games for Team India. However, he only had a short stay. After his brilliant show in IPL 2021, Chakravarthy was picked by selectors in India's squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. He played 6 T20I games and took 2 wickets in the tournament.

However, with India facing a humiliating first-round exit, the idea of introducing inexperienced players was highly criticized by many. Later, Chakravarthy was snubbed from the national team and did not make a national comeback.

IPL Career

Varun Chakravarthy was first picked by Punjab Kings in IPL 2019 auction for Rs. 8.40 crore. His expensive price grabbed a lot of headlines. However, the franchise played him only in 1 game where he got 1 wicket.

The leg spinner was later picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2020 season. Unlike Punjab Kings, KKR featured him in 13 games in the tournament. Chakravarthy also utilized the opportunity well, getting 17 scalps. He followed it up with 19 wickets in the next 2021 season.

Over the years, KKR has retained Varun Chakravarthy in their squad. He is a crucial domestic spinner for the side. Except for the 2022 season where he got 6 scalps, Chakravarthy has been a consistent spinner in every season.
