Bangladesh star Shakib Al Hasan has disclosed the reason for withdrawing his name from the upcoming auction for the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The much-awaited auction for IPL 2024 is scheduled to take place on December 19 in Dubai.

While cricketers from around the world will be featuring in the auction and will be hoping to bag lucrative IPL contracts, Shakib Al Hasan has decided against it. The Bangladesh captain has not played in the IPL since 2022. He went unsold in the IPL 2022 auction before Kolkata Knight Riders signed him up in the following auction.

The all-rounder, however, did not play in IPL 2023 due to personal reasons. And he has decided against playing in the IPL once again. At an age where most cricketers prioritize franchise cricket to earn lucrative deals, Shakib Al Hasan’s decision to not play in T20 leagues has taken many by surprise.

Shakib Al Hasan reveals the reason for not playing IPL:

Shakib Al Hasan has revealed that he has decided against playing franchise cricket to prolong his international career in all three formats. The veteran allrounder, who has been playing international cricket since 2006, is in no mood to slow down as he wants to ply his trade for his country in all the formats. He has also decided against playing in the PSL for the same reason.

“I did not give my name in IPL and so a window will be opened when my manager gave my name in PSL I told him to withdraw it and my name is not there in PSL so my plan is to give all this time to national team because I will sacrifice the franchise tournament that I used to play,” Shakib Al Hasan said.

“I am playing in three formats and hope that I can continue that but no one knows about (the) future and what is in store but till now I have the desire to play cricket for a long time,” he added.

The 36-year-old was last seen in action during the 2023 World Cup where he led Bangladesh to an eighth-place finish and helped them secure a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy. He has been sidelined since then due to a finger injury.
