Mithali Raj considered retiring after seeing Rahul Dravid call it quits in 2012. She had begun to consider what would happen when her moment as a cricketer came to an end.

Mithali, one of the greatest cricketers in history, retired a week ago, bringing an end to an impressive career that began in 1999. While the legendary batsman announced her retirement in 2022, her first thoughts on the subject were in 2012.

Mithali discussed her retirement announcement and other discussions in an interview with PTI. She remembered how the news of Dravid’s retirement made her wonder how things were when she decided to hang her shoes.

“To be honest, the first time I considerer retiring was when Rahul Dravid retired” (in 2012). I had seen his press conference after seeing how emotional he was, and I wondered how it would be when I retired. Will I experience that feeling feelings? And there were only a few other retirements after that, and I believed I would not be as emotional.”

Mithali stated that she had decided to retire after the 2022 Women’s World Cup.

“I had made up my mind that the World Cup would be my last.” But I am not someone who makes decisions while experiencing feelings. Then I ended up going to a domestic T20 event and realized I did not have the same passion, so I decided it was my time to retire.”

“I am indeed a goal-oriented individual. My ambition was to compete in the World Cup. After that, I could not see myself for the next four years, so I decided it was time to retire. Things affect you after a while. So it still has not sunk in,” Mithali explained.

Mithali’s total of 7,805 runs from 232 One-Day Internationals is the highest in the 50-over women’s game. Former England captain Charlotte Edwards comes in second with 5,992.
