Arjun Tendulkar has never reached a score of 100 in a BCCI competition before this past Wednesday. Whether it be senior or age-group cricket. The highest score he has ever scored with a bat was 91 against Uttar Pradesh for Mumbai in a U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy match during the 2018–19 season. At the current Ranji Trophy match in Porvorim, the 23-year-old finally had his big moment as he achieved his first First Class hundred against Rajasthan.

In a short time, he was all over social media timelines, and the majority of the congrats postings had the “like father, like son” motif. When Arjun reached 100 on his FC debut for Goa, he joined the likes of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in the company of the very best.

First Hour To Bowlers: Arjun Tendulkar

Arjun’s journey wasn’t easy as he stepped up to the plate in a trying circumstance. The first task at hand was to finish the day’s play’s remaining overs and “guard” a well-set Suyash Prabhudesai, who was still going strong well after fifty at that point.

When stumps were called on the first day, the left-hander did an excellent job of serving as the night watchman and making sure there weren’t any more casualties.

“When I first walked out to bat I had to face most of the balls because Suyash was batting on 80 so it was my job to protect him and play most of the balls,” Arjun told reporters after play ended on Day 2.

“As of the approach today, it was more about the basics. Just give first hour to the bowlers. After we grit the initial phase out, it’s time to capitalise. And time to get runs. As I said, it was the new ball and the new ball would do something. I honestly don’t care how I look, I gritted the first difficult phase out and then I cashed in,” said Arjun.

Did he know that his father had likewise gotten a century on his First Class debut? The prompt response was, “No, I wasn’t aware.

Always Had The Belief In My Ability: Arjun Tendulkar

Arjun the bowler has dominated the spotlight for years, while his batting prowess has mostly gone unappreciated. However, the left-hander always had confidence in his batting skills and claims that throughout his youth, he hit hundreds of runs in several trial games for the Mumbai Cricket Association.

“I always had belief in my ability and wanted to just get set, and once I am set it’s about cashing in and getting the big runs. As I said, just play the first hour out and capitalise,” said Arjun.

Despite having a strong start in the First Class circuit, Arjun is not eager to look too far ahead and instead wants to concentrate on the here and now and winning the current match against Rajasthan.

“Just play each game and each ball on the merit. For now, just try winning this game,” said Arjun.

Arjun had a fantastic connection with Prabhudesai, who scored 212, and the left-right combo unmistakably stopped a highly effective Rajasthan onslaught on the second day. More crucially, the pair played in the middle for more than 60 overs while compiling 221 runs. When Kamlesh Nagarkoti dismissed Arjun for 120, the strong stand came to an end. After the play was over for the day, Arjun commented about the collaboration and praised Prabhudesai.

“It was great help (batting with Prabhudesai). He was batting well and showing good character. Had tightened his defence and was leaving the ball well. I kept talking to him and it was great help in the middle,” said Arjun.
