Axar Patel-led Delhi Capitals (DC) faced off against the Rishabh Pant-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the reverse fixture of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Tuesday, April 22.
Delhi Capitals won against the Lucknow Super Giants by 8 wickets in the 40th match of IPL 2025 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
Once we picked up 2 quick wickets, we got the momentum - Axar Patel
Bowling first in the match, DC pulled back things very well and restricted LSG to 159/6 with Mukesh Kumar (4/33) shining with the ball. Chasing the target, KL Rahul and Abishek Porel hit brilliant fifties, and the run-chase was completed in 17.5 overs.
Speaking after the match, Axar Patel said that they started poorly with the ball but managed to shift momentum towards them pretty quickly. He said:
"The way we started with the ball, we didn't take wickets but we were in control of the game. Once we picked up 2 quick wickets, we got the momentum and all the bowlers did well to restrict them under 160."
I have a slight injury which is why I haven't been bowling much - Axar Patel
Axar Patel further revealed that he didn't bowl a lot in this edition of IPL because he has been dealing with an injury, but he bowled 4 overs on the trot against LSG because he had a good rhythm. He stated:
"I have a slight injury which is why I haven't been bowling much so far and today I felt in good rhythm and bowled up front. I was also looking at the match-ups (whenever I made a bowling change) and that is how I rotated my bowlers and all of them responded very well.
Axar Patel also said that he plays according to strength when he comes to bat and urged his team to improve the fielding. He said:
"I always play according to my strengths whenever I walk out to bat, doesn't matter which position I am batting, and I have been getting success whenever I tried to line-up a bowler, so feeling good. We can improve our fielding a bit. The drop chances will be crucial during crunch games going ahead."
How did DC perform in the previous IPL match against LSG?
Delhi Capitals began their IPL 2025 campaign with a one-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants in Visakhapatnam on March 24. Chasing a huge total, DC pulled off a heist thanks to the heroics of Ashutosh Sharma.
DC won the toss and elected to bowl first in the match. They did not have a very good outing as the duo of Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran demolished the bowling attack with their sensational half-centuries.
At one stage, it looked like LSG would breach the 230-run mark, but the DC bowlers pulled things back and restricted them to 209/8.
Kuldeep Yadav (2/20) and Mitchell Starc (3/42) led the fightback and got support from Vipraj Nigam and Mukesh Kumar, who bagged one wicket each.
Chasing the target, DC started disastrously as they were reduced to 7/3 in two overs. Also, when Faf du Plessis and Axar Patel fell by the sixth over, DC were tottering at 65/5 in the 7th over.
Despite being under pressure, the middle and lower order refused to surrender as Tristan Stubbs chipped in with 34 runs, and Vipraj Nigam blasted 39 off just 15 deliveries.
The contribution by the above-mentioned batters kept DC in the hunt, and the final blow was delivered by Ashutosh Sharma, who slammed 66 off 31 balls, as he smashed a boundary on the third ball of the last over to guide his team to an epic victory.
