Veteran southpaw Shikhar Dhawan will be making his Team India captaincy debut in the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka and former cricketer Yuvraj Singh expects a lot of lighter moments on the field with the Delhi cricketer in charge of the team.

During a recent interaction with Sportskeeda, Yuvraj Singh recalled a hilarious incident from the 2012 Duleep Trophy semi-final between North Zone and Central Zone where the 2011 World Cup-winner played under the leadership of Shikhar.

Singh recounted a funny anecdote from the match where he revealed that Dhawan had brought everyone inside the circle thinking that Bhuvneshwar Kumar was on 99 when in reality, he was batting on 49.

It was only when Yuvraj Singh apprised him that Dhawan sent the fielders back.

‘’Captaincy is going to be funny. Because I have played under Shikhar and he made some really funny moves. One of Shikhar’s favorite moves I remember is, we were playing against Central Zone and Bhuvneshwar Kumar was batting on 49. And Shikhar Dhawan called everyone inside the circle.” said Yuvraj Singh.

‘’I was standing in the slips and asked him what happened. He replied that Bhuvneshwar Kumar is batting on 99, so he called everyone in the circle. So I told him it was not 99 but 49. Then he asked everyone to go back.” he added.

As far as the match is concerned, Yuvraj’s 208 and Dhawan’s 121 helped North Zone rack up 451 runs in their first innings. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 128-run knock lifted the Central Zone from a precarious position of 5/117 and then 9/342 to 469, helping his team to qualify for the final on the basis of the first-innings lead.

Yuvraj Singh, however, expressed his happiness at the fact that Dhawan will finally get to lead his country in the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka.

Singh lauded Dhawan for his consistent performances over the years, adding that he has seen his former teammate grow as a player.

‘’I am happy for Shikhar, I have seen that guy grow in Indian cricket. He is one man who has always survived on his performance. There have been times where he has not had the support but his bat has always spoken. So, I am very proud of that guy. There were question marks on him but his bat has always done the talking.” said Yuvraj Singh.

That said, Shikhar will have to wait for a few more days before he makes his debut as India captain as the ODI series which was scheduled to start from July 13 has now been pushed to July 18 due to the outbreak of Covid in the Sri Lankan camp.
