Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar is hoping that Virat Kohli manages to lead India to the T20 World Cup title this year and steps down as the T20I captain on a high.

Kohli announced on Thursday that he will be relinquishing the T20I captaincy duties at the end of the World Cup in the UAE in October-November, but will continue as the ODI and Test skipper.

Speaking to the Times Of India, Dilip Vengsarkar said that he was expecting this decision at some point soon considering the pressure and responsibilities on Kohli owing to being the star batsman and the captain in all three formats.

“I was expecting it. He’s been leading India and has been the No 1 batsman in all formats for almost eight years. He’s been under tremendous pressure to perform, because we expect a lot from him every time he goes into bat,” Dilip Vengsarkar told Times Of India.

“The timing of his decision has been perfect. The only thing I hope now is he wins the World Cup and signs off as an India T20 captain on a high. It could be his last hurrah as T20I captain,” he added.

Rohit deserves to be India’s next T20 captain: Dilip Vengsarkar

Dilip Vengsarkar feels Rohit Sharma, the vice-captain of the white-ball side, should be the next man to lead India in the T20Is. He highlighted Sharma’s success with the Mumbai Indians and the national side whenever Kohli had been rested.

“Rohit deserves to be India’s next T20 captain because he’s done exceptionally well whenever he’s been given an opportunity. In 2018, India won the Asia Cup under his captaincy. Besides that, he’s been an exceptional captain for the Mumbai Indians,” the 65-year-old former batsman stated.

The second half of the IPL 2021 will run from September 19 to October 15; a couple of days after that, the T20 World Cup will commence. India will take on Pakistan on October 24.
