Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar reminisced about Sachin Tendulkar’s exceptional performance against spinners Arshad Ayub and Venkatapathy Raju in a Ranji Trophy match. Dilip Vengsarkar stated that he was convinced of Sachin Tendulkar’s promising future after witnessing his batting on a turning pitch.
He represented the Indian national cricket team from 1976 to 1992. He played 116 Tests and 129 ODIs in his international career. Vengsarkar scored 6,868 runs in Test cricket and 3,508 runs in ODIs. He was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad. Vengsarkar also captained the Indian team during his career.

At the launch of the book Fab Five: The Pandavas of India’s Batting, Dilip Vengsarkar recalled Tendulkar’s performance against Arshad Ayub and Venkatapathy Raju on a turning track. Vengsarkar noted that he expected Tendulkar to have a successful career in cricket after the knock.
“He was going so well on a turning track. I thought he was going to go places and that is what happened,” he added.

Dilip Vengsarkar praised Sachin Tendulkar’s brilliant batting in a 1991 Ranji Trophy final against Haryana. Vengsarkar stated that they might have won the game if Tendulkar had stayed at the crease a bit longer.
“There was this match in 1991 against Haryana — the Ranji Trophy final — and the way he batted…we were chasing 355 and we were 22 for three wickets (34/3).
“The way he played in that innings was absolutely brilliant. We could have won the game had he stayed there a couple of overs more,” said Vengsarkar.

Dilip Vengsarkar and Tendulkar played impressive knocks while chasing a massive target of 355 runs during the 1991 Ranji Trophy final against Haryana. Mumbai had to chase down 355 runs in 68 overs to win the final match. However, the Mumbai team lost three wickets for just 34 runs on the board.
Tendulkar played aggressively against seasoned players like Kapil Dev and Chetan Sharma. The right-handed batter scored 96 off 75 balls, including five sixes. Tendulkar formed a crucial 134-run partnership with Vengsarkar for the fourth wicket. Bombay still had a challenging task ahead after Tendulkar's departure.
Vinod Kambli (45) formed an 81-run partnership with Vengsarkar. The team seemed in a strong position with five wickets remaining. Bombay lost nine wickets for 305 runs. Vengsarkar showed faith in Kuruvilla’s ability. With just three runs needed from 15 balls, Kuruvilla's run-out changed the game's outcome.
