Australia Test captain Tim Paine reacted to youngster Will Pucovski suffering a concussion last week. The 23-year-old batsman sustained a hit on his head during a throwdowns session last week at the Junction Oval, Victoria.

There’s no need to rush Will Pucovski at the moment: Tim Paine

Paine is monitoring the situation of the young batsman and said they wouldn’t be rushing him to play at the moment to give him enough time to recover.

“[It was] shattering when I found out. I’ve spoken to him a bit the last few days. He is improving slowly,”  Paine told SEN Hobart.

“He’s still hoping to be ready at some stage this summer. He’s got plenty of support around him, and we know how good he is, so there’s no need to rush him at the moment. He’s 22-23 years of age. He’s got a lot of time in the game if we can get it right,” he added.

Pucovski has had a history of concussions – the right-hander, in fact, has been concussed up to 10 times during his brief career.

The last one of those was during a practice game when he was struck in the head by India’s Kartik Tyagi while he was batting for Australia ahead of the Australia-India Test series.

Paine said he was devastated to learn that the Victorian batsman had once again endured a concussion and said they need to be very careful regarding his injuries.

“I don’t think it’s as bad as some of the others he’s had before, but with his history, we have to be very careful. I was devastated to hear it’s happened again,” Paine said.

I am moving pretty normally: Tim Paine

Paine himself suffered pain in his neck as a bulging disc had been causing discomfort in his left arm and neck, which cast doubts over his availability for the Ashes in December.

The 36-year-old Australia red-ball skipper underwent invasive neck surgery last month and said he was confident to make it to the Ashes against England.

Since returning from his surgery, Paine talked about his practice session and said he is moving normally but still has pain in his left arm.

“I’m doing a bit of pilates, jogging and swimming. So it was good to have the bat back in hand. I’m moving pretty normally,” Paine said.

“I hit about 20 balls yesterday (Thursday), albeit underarm. The only issue at this stage is strength in my left arm,” he added.

The Ashes between Australia and England will commence on December 8 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
