The chief selector of the India National Cricket Team, Ajit Agarkar, spoke about the reason behind naming Shubman Gill as the vice-captain of the team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He said that they always keep an eye on the future while making decisions.
India National Cricket Team unveiled their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy on Saturday (18th January). The focus was on the vice-captain of the team, and it was none other than Gill, who was given the role to be the deputy of Rohit Sharma for the tournament.
Shubman Gill was added to the leadership group after the T20 World Cup 2024, was captain of the team in Zimbabwe, and then was made vice-captain ahead ofthe Sri Lanka series
Gill was added to the leadership group after the T20 World Cup 2024. He was asked to lead the Team in the T20I series against the Zimbabwe National Cricket Team. And then after that was named as the vice-captain of the white-ball teams for the Sri Lanka tour.
Few reports claimed that Jasprit Bumrah would be named as the vice-captain of the team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, especially after his heroics with the ball and as a captain in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. But that wasn't the case.
The selectors opted to back Shubman Gill in the role, and this gives a hint that the batter might go on to take over the leadership from Rohit Sharma once the batter calls time on his career. Gill, no doubt, has been one of the best talents in the country.
I won't look into it much but a lot of the feedback for these decisions comes from the dressing room - Ajit Agarkar on naming Shubman Gill vice-captain
While talking about Gill being named as the vice-captain, he said that the young batter was vice-captain in Sri Lanka, and they took dressing room feedback in making the decision. Speaking to reporters, he explained:
“Gill has been vice-captain in Sri Lanka as well,” Agarkar stated. “You always want to be on the lookout for leaders. I won't look into it much but a lot of the feedback for these decisions comes from the dressing room.”
Shubman Gill has developed himself as one of the best openers for the team in a short span of time, has 2328 runs in 47 innings
Shubman Gill arguably has developed himself as one of the best openers for the team in short span of time. He has scored 2328 one-day international (ODI) runs in 47 innings with an average of 58.20. He will be extremely important for his team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 while batting at the top.
Shubman Gill, of late, has come under the scanner for his inconsistency. The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be a great opportunity for him to reply to all his critics in style and help his team lift the title, where India will be playing all their games in UAE.
