India will be without their best bowler Jasprit Bumrah in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. As a result, the pressure will be on the left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh to deliver in the important slog overs.
Former England cricketer David Lloyd has opened up on Jasprit Bumrah's absence and feels that India will miss his skills in the tournament. Lloyd also warned Arshdeep Singh of a bigger challenge in ODI cricket.
Arshdeep has played just nine ODIs so far in his career. While he is an established T20I bowler for India having played 63 T20Is, his limited ODI appearances will be tested in such an important tournament.
David Lloyd on Jasprit Bumrah's absence
While speaking to talkSPORT, David Lloyd claimed that India will miss Jasprit Bumrah as he is the best bowler in the world. He feels that India have some holes to fill since Bumrah will be unavailable.
“You are going to miss him (Jasprit Bumrah). You can't get away from the fact that the best bowler in the world isn't playing, then you've got a problem,” Lloyd observed.
Jasprit Bumrah has played key roles for India and has established himself as the team's bowling spearhead across formats over the last few years. The 31-year-old quick played a vital role in India's T20 World Cup 2024 win last year with 15 wickets in 8 matches at an unbelievable average of 4.17.
He was expected to play in the Champions Trophy 2025 but unfortunately suffered a back spasm during the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Sydney. The injury was severe enough and ruled him out of the upcoming Champions Trophy.
David Lloyd on Arshdeep Singh
Jasprit Bumrah's role is likely to be filled by Arshdeep Singh in the upcoming tournament. Just like Bumrah, Arshdeep is also a capable bowler in the death overs and has grown in stature over the last few years.
David Lloyd asked the opposition batters to make full use of Arshdeep's inexperience in ODIs and be aggressive against him.
"If you are the opposition, test him out, really get into him. This is not T20, this is not a little party, you've got to come back and come back again, and that is something he won't be used to. If you are the opposition, you try and play on that, let's see what he's got,” the cricketer-turned-commentator added.
Arshdeep Singh in T20Is
Arshdeep Singh has the skills to pick up wickets with the new ball and can bowl in crunch moments of the match. However, he has yet to prove his worth in ODI cricket as most of his experience has been only in the T20Is.
Arshdeep has played 63 T20Is and picked up 99 wickets at an average of 18.30 and an economy rate of 8.29. The left-arm quick played a key role in India's T20 World Cup title win last year with 17 wickets in 8 matches at an average of 12.64, finishing as the tournament's second-highest wicket-taker.
In 9 ODIs he has played so far, Arshdeep has picked up 14 wickets at an average of 23. He will be a key bowler in India's line-up and is likely to be a part of the Playing XI right from the start.
