The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a statement to clarify Rassie van der Dussen‘s controversial dismissal during the World Cup match between Pakistan and South Africa at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

The Proteas star was given out lbw by on-field umpire Paul Reiffel after Usama Mir’s delivery trapped him in front. The right-handed batsman, however, was not convinced by the umpire’s decision and decided to use the DRS (Decision Review System). And the DRS call made things even more complicated.

At first, the ball-tracking technology showed that the ball would have gone on to miss the leg stump. But after a few seconds, a different trajectory of the ball was shown. In the second clip, the ball was clipping the stump. On both occasions, the tracking showed the ball was pitching in line, the impact was ‘the umpire’s call’.

However. the ball’s trajectory was different on both occasions, leaving many utterly confused and surprised. The second clip was considered the decisive one and Rassie van der Dussen was given out. He departed after scoring 21 runs and leaving his team in a precarious situation.

ICC issues clarification over Rassie van der Dussen’s dismissal:

Rassie van der Dussen’s dismissal caused quite a stir in the cricketing fraternity. Soon after he was given out in a controversial manner, the social media platforms were filled with posts slamming the officials for the blunder. And it did not take ICC long to issue a clarification. The governing body of the game accepted that the first graphic was shown ‘erroneously’.

“In today’s match between South Africa and Pakistan, an incomplete graphic was erroneously displayed during the LBW review of Rassie van der Dussen. The completed graphic with the right details was ultimately displayed,” said an ICC spokesperson.

Talking about the game, South Africa registered a thrilling 1-wicket win over Pakistan to take another huge step towards the semifinal. The Proteas now have 5 wins from 6 games. Pakistan, on the other hand, suffered their fourth loss in a row. Batting first, Pakistan were all out for 270. In reply, South Africa chased down the total in the 48th over.
