The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the Player of the month for August 2021 in both the men’s and women’s cricket categories. The nominations feature a strong list of candidates sure to leave the fans divided.

The men’s player of the month nominees were no surprises as England’s Joe Root, Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi, and India’s Jasprit Bumrah were featured after their amazing performances for their respective national sides.

Shaheen Afridi, in two Tests against West Indies in August, looked like picking a wicket every time the captain trusted him with the ball and ended up picking 18 wickets in the Test series. He picked a 10-wicket haul in the second Test and helped Pakistan win the Test by 109 runs and leveled the series 1-1.

India’s Bumrah was equally excellent with his fast bowling against England in the ongoing five-Test series. He took nine wickets in the first Test but received just as many plaudits for his role with the bat in the second Test at Lord’s. He added an innings changing 89*-run partnership with Mohammad Shami that helped India set a tough target on day five and then win the Test to go 1-0 up in the series.

England captain Joe Root slammed a century in each of the first three Tests against India with his highest score being 180* and has already crossed the 500-run mark in the series. This purple patch has led to reign at the top of the ICC Test batting rankings for the first time in six years.
