ICC Women's ODI Team of the Year 2024 announced, Smriti Mandhana makes the cut

The ICC, on Friday (January 24), announced the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year 2024. The team is filled with some of the biggest names in the game including two India stars.

Apart from the Indian stars, the ICC Women's ODI Team of the Year 2024 features three players from England, two players each from South Africa and Australia, and one player each from West Indies and Sri Lanka. England have the most players in the ICC Women's ODI Team of the Year 2024.

From India, Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma have been named in the star-studded team. During the cut-off period, Mandhana played 13 ODIs and scored an impressive 747 runs. She hit back-to-back centuries during the home series against South Africa before scoring 90 runs in the third game.

Mandhana was adjudged the Player of the Series for scoring 343 runs in three games. The left-handed batter had scored a century against New Zealand before scoring one against Australia as well at the WACA. She scored more than 50 runs in each of the three ODIs against West Indies at home last month.

Mandhana eventually ended the year as the highest run-scorer in Women’s ODIs. Her brilliant display has also put her in contention for the prestigious ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2024. On the other hand, Deepti Sharma picked up 24 wickets in addition to scoring 186 runs in 13 ODIs.

ICC Women's ODI Team of the Year 2024:

South Africa star Laura Wolvaardt has been named the captain of the ICC Women's ODI Team of the Year 2024. Wolvaardt played 12 ODIs last year and scored 697 runs with the help of 3 centuries and as many fifties. She scored back-to-back centuries against Sri Lanka including a career-best 184 before scoring a century against India.

Mandhana and Wolvaardt have been picked as the openers of the team. They are followed by Sri Lanka star Chamari Athapaththu who scored 458 runs and picked up 9 wickets in 9 games last year. At number four is West Indies star Hayley Matthews.

One of the leading allrounders in women's cricket, Matthews scored 469 runs and picked up 9 wickets in 7 games last year. She is followed by South Africa's Marizanne Kapp. Kapp scored 114 runs and picked up 12 wickets in 11 matches last year.

Australia's Ashleigh Gardner and Annabel Sutherland have also made the cut for the ICC Women's ODI Team of the Year 2024. Gardner scored 269 runs and took 20 wickets in 12 matches while Sutherland scored 369 runs and picked up 13 wickets in 12 matches.

From England, wicketkeeper Amy Jones and spinner Sophie Ecclestone and pacer Kate Cross have also been included in the ICC Women's ODI Team of the Year 2024. Jones scored 382 runs and affected 15 dismissals in 12 ODIs last year. On the other hand, Ecclestone picked up 21 wickets in 11 matches while Cross claimed 19 wickets in 13 matches.
