Australian wicketkeeper, Alex Carey revealed how he received abuse from England fans towards his family after the Ashes 2023 series. Carey said that he had to delete his Instagram account for a week to make a stop to it.

In the Ashes 2023, Australia retained the series even after it ended in a 2-2 draw since the Aussies won the Ashes 2022. However, England showed a quality performance and came back into the series even after they trailed by 2-0 after the end of the second match.

While speaking to Australian media outlets, Alex Carey said that there many hurtful comments made by the English fans towards him or his family.

Carey stated that it was something new and that he had not faced something like that and the comments were pretty aggressive.

“There was a lot of nasty comments that came my way, or came the family’s way, so post-incident it was pretty aggressive and something new as well. I haven’t had that animosity come my way so that was new. It’s not uncommon for us players to receive these, but there was just a few more on this occasion,” Alex Carey said.

The Aussie said that he did not keep a check on the comments and had people to monitor it who later deleted a few comments.

“I didn’t really look into it much, I didn’t have to. I had a lot of people looking at it and monitoring it. You don’t really need to see them. A lot of comments got deleted.

“It did get pretty nasty from reports. Initially again, if your wife jumps online and you see (you) getting abused or even them getting abused for being your wife and kids, you probably don’t take it too well,” he added.

Focused on being present with the family: Alex Carey

The Aussie wicketkeeper said that at first, he thought he was wrong but later realized that he had nothing to do with and to stop it from affecting his mental he deleted his Instagram and spent time with family.

“But 24 hours or 48 hours after that, things simmer down and you understand you’ve done nothing wrong, and nothing changes. I actually deleted Instagram for a week or so and just put the phone down and focused on being present with the family,” Alex Carey further added.
