With KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer’s ICC World Cup 2023 participation still doubtful, former Australian spinner Brad Hogg has revealed his ideal number four for India for the mega event.

Both KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are currently recovering from their respective injuries. Both have had surgeries and then underwent rehabilitation at the NCA as well. There are reports that Rahul might make a comeback in the Asia Cup but Iyer’s participation in the tournament looks doubtful.

The BCCI is expected to announce India’a Asia Cup 2023 squad next week. It is being said that players who get picked for the Asia Cup will more or less make it to the World Cup squad as well.

As India continues to find answers to their number four conundrum Hogg has revealed his choice for that number. He has suggested Tilak Varma’s name for that position. The youngster had a good start to his international career with scores of 39, 51, and 49* in the first three T20Is.

Would Have Tilak Varma Coming In At Number Four: Brad Hogg

“If they’re (Iyer and Rahul) not fit, we need a keeper in this team. I don’t think Ishan Kishan can bat lower down the order. I think he is predominantly an opener. If they open with Kishan and Rohit Sharma, I would have Tilak Varma coming in at No. 4. He has hardly played any one-day cricket. But the way he has operated in T20 cricket shows that he has got the goods for any situation” Hogg said in a video posted on Instagram.

Hogg further suggested that if Kishan does not open with Rohit Sharma, it is Sanju Samson who should be picked over the southpaw and slotted in the middle order. Samson recently scored a fifty in the third ODI against West Indies. He is also a part of the T20I squad.

“If they go with Gill and Rohit Sharma at the top of the order with Sanju Samson at No. 4 as the Indian keeper going into that World Cup. I think he can offer something substantial in that position.”

Like the last World Cup, India’s major problem heading into this World Cup is the number four slot. With doubts over Rahul and Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Sanju Samson will be fighting for that spot. Tilak Varma after his continuous good performance in T20Is is another name that is in the discussion.
