England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that ace pacer Jofra Archer will be traveling to India with the World Cup squad as a reserve player. The governing body mentioned that he will continue his rehab and his fitness program alongside the team in India.
Jofra Archer was ruled out of the ICC World Cup 2023 as his elbow injury injury reoccurred during the IPL 2023 and he was out of the entire English summer. There were chances that he would make it into the squad for the mega event as he was seen training with the team.
But that didn’t happen as Jofra Archer wasn’t deemed fit to play. However, he still will be on the plane to India as the team will take him along as a reserve. ECB national selector Luke Wright confirmed about the same and stated:
“Jofra Archer will be travelling with the squad to India. He is one of the reserves but we also need to look after him, and focus on his rehab.”
Apart from Jofra Archer’s update, Luke Wright also revealed that Joe Root has been added to England’s squad for the first ODI against Ireland. The batter himself requested the ECB to include him as he had a horrendous outing against New Zealand in a four-match series.
Luke Wright also talked about Jason Roy’s late omission from the ICC World Cup squad. The opening batter was named in the provisional squad but had to face the snub as Harry Brook was included in the team. Speaking about the decision, he pointed out that Roy was on the ruthless side of the sport.
“It’s not a decision we’ve taken lightly. In the early squad, we had him down for opening the batting with Jonny Bairstow in the World Cup…but things happen in sport, injuries happen.
“Everyone was told ‘look, this is the 15 we’re looking to take to the World Cup’, but unfortunately that’s the ruthless side of sport isn’t it? It’s not the nice side of sport that changes do have to be made.”
