Former cricketer Eoin Morgan emphasized that England are the second favourite to win the title in the much-awaited ODI World Cup later this year. Eoin Morgan highlighted that the Indian team is the favourite in the tournament, considering they are playing in their home conditions.
England won their first-ever ODI World Cup trophy in 2019 under the leadership of Eoin Morgan. The southpaw led the team to triumph following a humiliating performance in the 2015 edition. The Three Lions will enter as the defending champions in the ODI World Cup.
England Are A Very Good Team – Eoin Morgan
In a conversation with Boria Majumdar, Eoin Morgan highlighted that the last three editions of the ODI World Cup were won by the host nations.
“England are a very good team. I will rate them second-favourites after India, but only just. India, on home soil, is the favourite and are a very good team. That’s been the case for all of the last few World Cups. India in 2011, Australia in 2015, England in 2019 and India again in 2023,” Morgan said.
India will host the World Cup between October 5 and November 19. The tournament will adopt a round-robin format, with each team competing against the other nine. The top four teams will progress to the knockout rounds of the competition.
Their Talent Will Make A Big Difference – Eoin Morgan
Eoin Morgan emphasized that the challenge for the Jos Buttler-led team is playing matches in various parts of the country. Morgan said that England had a strong lineup with fantastic batters and bowlers.
“But Jos Buttler and his team have some fantastic batsmen and bowlers, and their talent will make a big difference come the business end of the tournament,” he further added.
“If you ask me to pick my best four, I will add Australia and Pakistan to the mix. With the matches spread across all parts of the country, it will be a real test, and these four teams have the maximum depth and versatility.”
Jofra Archer, England’s leading wicket-taker in the 2019 World Cup, was excluded from the provisional World Cup squad. Archer is currently recovering from his injury and is unlikely to secure a spot in the final squad.
